The answer is man. The morning, afternoon and evening are the different stages of man's life - Morning is the infant stage when man crawls on both hands and feet. Afternoon is man's youth when it walk on its 2 legs and Evening represents the old age of man when man has to use a walking stick which is the third leg.

That's the "Ridde of the Sphinx"! :)

It's a metaphor for the stages a human goes through in life. The "morning" refers to us as babies, in which we crawl on our hands and feet (i.e. 4 legs). The "afternoon" refers to us as adults, when we walk on 2 legs. The "evening" refers to us as old folks, when we use a cane to help us walk (i.e. 3 legs).
