when immigrants come to our country do they not have to adapt to our way of life? We in turn have to cater to them as to not offend anyone. If they so want to be here shouldn't they atleast make the effort to embrace our way of life? If I were to relocate to their country I'm sure that would be expected from me, does anyone agree or disagree opinions please..

Let me further explain why I'm asking this question as to not offend everyone. I lived in Queens, New York for my whole life and now live in Fort Lauderdale Fl.

Main spoken language in Queens County NY is Chinese, not English, not Spanish they have large shopping districts in areas where as you can't even read the signage Chinese, Korean, Greek etc. different alphabets, does this mean they don't welcome American business? Menus in resteraunts some have a translation some don't. Should I in my own country have to seek out translators on the street to make purchases or communicate my wants and needs? Miami isn't that far behind with this. I love cuban food I as an English speaking american would love to go in and place an order without again a translator not all locations but quite a few. Miami International Airport is a nightmare extremly confusing always a mess try asking for directions ooops! you can't, well you can but good luck finding someone to understand you.

I'm not exactly talking culture as much as language also 2 years ago the supreme court in Broward County FL allowed a muslim woman to take a drivers license photograph in full veil without a face, showing only eyeballs. Disturbing in this day and age. Just remember it wouldn't be you or me we wouldn't be allowed to cover our faces for government issued ID's

Ok Im gonna try to put a different perspective on this answer. Everybody seems to be saying the same thing...with a few exceptions. They (the immigrants) should adapt to us, they should learn the language..etc...etc. Sure they should be able to communicate, know the laws, and such, but I dont think they should have to abondoned their entire culture and lifestyle just to be considered "real" Americans. The funny thing is that if the immigrants that first came to America had done what some of you are suggesting that present day immigrants should do, then we would all be running around wearing buffalo skins and living in tee-pees. Why does everyone seem to forget that we are all immigrants or decendent from immigrants. We are a melting pot...thats what makes this country so great. I love that we have so many different cultures and ways of life right here. How boring would it be if everyone spoke the same, dressed the same, acted the same. So get over it already....and if u dont like it... go back to where ever you or your immigrant ancestors came from.

The Country we live in today was made great by Immigrants. In fact most of the people on this board who mock or look down on immigrants are a product of immigrants if they would only go
back far enough.

I currently am an American living in, and planning on staying in, China. I am essentially an immigrant worker. Though I live here, have learned the language, and have adapted myself to the culture it still hasn't changed me at a core level. My perspective on the world has broadened, but the core person I am has not changed, and because of that I do not fit in. I am, and always will be, a foreigner here. But I am ok with this, I know that if I work hard and let them to see who I am they may someday accept my ideas, or even pick up some of my ways of living. I will never be "Chinese", and they will not become "American" by learning something from me.

In terms of embracing a way of living, you are asking them to not just change their habits and way of doing things, but to give all that their culture is for your culture. Would you do that????? Do you think "American" culture is better than theirs???? And what is American culture anyway??? American culture is a mix of cultures from all around the world, which has been inherited by you as a result of the strong-willed and hard working immigrants which came before you.

I have an idea!!! Let's truly revolutionize our country!!! Let's make a system where your citizenship in our country is not guaranteed by whether you where born in our country, but is based rather on your hard work and drive!!! If you are lazy and get fired from three jobs you lose your citizenship and get kicked out of the country, no matter what race you are!!! This would create a "better" country for everyone who lived here, both citizens and immigrants!

I think I shall run for president

Yes and no. Have lived and travelled overseas a lot. When in other countries, you do adapt to their ways, mostly. However, you still keep your 'essence' as a priority. What makes it harder in the USA , (as well as making it the wonderful nation that we are) is that we are a 'melting pot' and somewhere along the line we seem to have forgotten this, and the single most important issue here is that ´ways´of life were developed/combined/ embraced as we went, along with keeping important, individual culture/religion/beliefs - a true fussion. And there is nothing wrong with this, quite the contrary. Would you do w/o, say pizza, or chinese food, or texmex, or bagels, or pita bread, or the blues, soul, salsa, waltz.... You see? We have such a vast variety, that it becomes difficult to 'adapt´. What do we adapt to - yes, the law, the basics, we learn the language, and from there it becomes a bit more difficult as there is are so very many options - what do I adapt to? Being called an immigrant, an illegal, not given a chance because of skin color, religion, or beliefs. Very confusing, and harmful. You´ve left all behind to come to the land of dreams. You miss home, yet you wish to better yourself, family, and the basic option left is survival, and there is so much to learn, to 'catch-up' with. You even begin to question the rights and wrongs, you question yourself constantly, Then, you are categorized and that is a tough one to assume, I'm sure. And, lastly, we have never gotten over racism, to the point you mention 'having to cater ... not to offend.' If we accept that we are racists, try not to be judgemental, not to impose our personal beliefs, try tolerance and the art of discovering and learning what´s behind so many of our fears, I have to believe we would be way ahead of the game. Yes, everybody should learn English, it is our language, but lets make certain we provide all with appropiate and effective tools. So, when in Rome, applies to some extent. Look at what is happening to the European countries presently -- they´ve criticized us for so very long, for just about everything, and now they know not what to do with their immigrants, other than try their best to exclude them from the mainstream. I believe we are already way ahead of them, and lets keep it that way, and keep improving. Next time you go to a foreign country, look, listen, learn, enjoy, absorb and select what works for you, discard what doesn´t, and never, ever, forget who you are: a citizen of the United States of America!
Sorry if I rambled on ; just hope I got some 'essence' through???

Totally agree...however, what makes Americans so much more desirable than peasants is intellegence and morals, those qualities are taught to our children from they're birth. Can you really expect these thieves that steal residency and social security numbers to rearrange their whole thinking process?. If it was possible or easy like cleaning toilets they would DO it!.
