Honestly, yes. If you're not too involved, you may want to get out before you get in too deep. Bipolar disorder is a difficult diagnosis to deal with, the behavior is unpredictable and difficult to understand. The highs are VERY high and the lows are VERY low. There is an unbelievably high suicide rate among those who suffer from bipolar disorder and it's very difficult to maintain a healthy, even relationship with them.

You say "possible". Has this person not yet been diagnosed? With appropriate treatment most people with bipolar disorder can led normal social and occupational lives. There is a spectrum of severity in bipolar disorder: some have mild episodes with long periods of normal mood and behavior whereas others have severe, psychotic, rapid-cycling forms of the illness. Someone said that you can enjoy a person in a manic state. Not necessarily true. Maybe in mild hypomanic episodes but not in full manic episodes. In mania mood typically swings from elation to depression to irritability to elation in an unpredictable fashion. They can exhibit very poor judgment, non-stop rapid speech, hyperactivity, grandiosity, sleeplessness and racing thoughts. Severe episodes of all three phases (manic, depressed and mixed) can include psychotic symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, catatonia and incoherence. I would get to know the person well and maybe date them. It doesn't mean you have to marry them. Things may work out well but if major problems pop up you can always break it off. If you're interested in the person I would give them a chance because most people with bipolar disorder live relatively normal and productive lives.

I don't think you should be afraid to date someone with a bipolar disorder. Just as long as you don't do anything too serious. Talk to the person about the disorder, get the real facts about it.

You will enjoy their manic phases but really hate their depressive episodes. If they are being treated by a professional and taking meds and appear stable, then proceed with caution at most. Ask about past relationships and how they turned out as well. Also, many bipolars have substance abuse problems, so be careful with that.

I don't think you should be scared but people with bipolar are often hard to get along with. Most are very intelligent but can be master manipulators. As the lady said, they can be prone to substance abuse and other addictive behaviors. If you like the person then by all means date them.

I am the mother of three bps and a spouse who is bp, and I can honestly say my life is never boring. Just be prepared to laugh at the wrong things, but cry at the right times.

you are going to be getting into a very big thing, and you have to ask your self if you are up for it, if you really love the person you should do it but if the result is going to be bad then just think about all the possible outcomes.

If they forget their meds, yes. Treating a bipolar person like some sort of freaky basket case doesn't help.

no, just beause a person has bipolar doesnt make them any less of a person. if they are taking the appropriate meds and it is controlled there is no reason to not have a productive relationship.
