I am thinking a five year contract would cover the cost his bypass surgery.
If he can be indentured is it the way to go or would I be better served enslaving him?

Ok, I actually think you are awesome. First, you are willing to pay for your neighbor's life-saving surgery!!!! Second, you aren't going to rush into slavery without thinking about it first.

Now, to answer your question: Indentured servitude basically means that he is your slave, except that when his debt is payed, he is free to go. I think this is the best way. (otherwise, despite your good intentions, you might get used to having a slave, and refuse to free him once the debt is paid).

I wish I had a friend as awesome as you.

I think that, in a situation like this, it's important that you consider the risks...

You are, really, probably being more than generous in only indenturing him for five years (considering the rapidly rising Federal Reserve Rate, and all). That said, what is the probability that your neighbor, who is in need of bypass surgery, will, after surgery, be able to perform to the standards required in order to adequately repay his debt? Better yet, is it not possible that your neighbor DESPITE the surgery, will die in less than 5 years (you might want to consult an actuarial table on this one).

All that said, I do understand that you are trying to help. I think, though, that it would be important to protect yourself contractually. Perhaps he can put one of his children up as collateral? Say, if he dies within the five year time period, you have full use of that child for 2 times the remaining time (as his child is, in all likelihood, less productive than he).

I say all that for this reason: I have learned the hard way that, no matter how nice you are, and how great the good deed that you try to do for a person, you will get taken advantage of. Don't let that happen to you, man. Take the appropriate precautions up front...

Wow, you really need to stop thinking that the world owes you something! Why do you think that you are so deserving of all this? Really, quit thinking that you need to be waited on hand and foot.....this is for your other stupid questions about this too.....
