Here is a good site to deal with this common problem>> http://www.wpxi.com/pets/9178470/detail.html
I would recommend trying Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for him. Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before he needs to relax. It will keep him happy, but reduce stress.
If your grocer doesn't carry chamomlile, you can use 'Sleepytime Tea' as it is the same, but with added herbs. Plain chamomile tastes better to a dog.

Okay, first of all don't kick your dog. Also don't think it's personal. If your going to scold your dog do it within the first 5 seconds of the act. Remember, dogs live in the now!!! Don't call your dog and then scold him/her either. All this will teach it is not to come to you. Above all, and this is the most important thing, you need to excercise your dog a lot. Take it walking for at least 30 min. a day, the longer the better. Odds are, your doggie is making a mess b/c it's trying to vent the stored energy it's got built up inside of it. It's common sense. Read Cesar Millan's book on dog psychology. You could learn a thing or two

You can't really punish him for his actions unless you see him. Dogs live in the now so punishing him for something he did hours before would be futile. As you said in your question. He wouldn't know what he did wrong.
But it sound like you need to set rules, boundaries and limitations for your furry friend. In order for you to correct the bad behavior, you have to catch him in the act and say NO or give a quick SHH sound. I would also suggest longer walks. 45 minutes MINIMUM walk will give the dog it's daily exercise requirements and he'll be too concern with laying down than anything else. Make sure its a structured walk meaning that he doesn't pull in front of you, or sniff grass at his lesure and he has to stay by your side or behind you. Keep the leash on the top of his neck(like in dog shows. It controls 60% percent of the brain and makes them a little easier to control overall) if he tries to pull ahead of you pull up on the leash and if he does anything that you find unacceptable(sniffing when you dont allow it, barking or whatever), you give him a correction with a quick sideways jerk coupled with a NO sound or a quick SHH sound. When you get in after the 45 min walk, put a dilectible treat on the counter on in the trash like meat or something then leave the room but watch with a small pocket mirror around the corner or peek and see what he does. The second he goes to go in the garbage or get up on the counters, correct him. You can leave his leash on also and give him a quick sideways yank, firm but not violent to slightly jerk the dogs neck at the same time you use the verbal correction. 1. He'll be tired from the walk and 2. Him being tired will make him more open to the conditioning that you're putting him through.
Be consistant and it will work.
walking will also make him hungry and will improve his appetite.dogs work for their food. Also I might suggest adding some dog gravy or wet food to his food. You might want to check the feeding instructions also. Half of a cup of kibble doesn't sound like enough and that could be the reason for his counter crashing and garbage diving.

Dogs live in the here and now, meaning they do know what they are doing at the time they are doing it, not after they have all ready done it(I.E... If you come to find that your dog has been digging in the trash and has left a nice mess, the only thing you can do there is clean up the mess. However if you catch your dog digging in the trash, yes scold him.)if you scold your dog after the fact, what you are actually scolding your dog for is what ever he is doing right at that moment. Crate training is a good option, but there are some other things you might try. 1.) There is a training aid called a SNAPPY TRAINER, it is a good tool for keeping your dog out of the trash.2.) To keep your dog off counter tops take empty soda bottles or cans and stack them so that when your dog jumps on the counter he actually has to hit the cans or bottles .The noise alone should keep him from not wanting to jump on the counters again. Good Luck!

I had a toy poodle when I was 16 years old. My family had one when I was much younger than that. They can become spoiled very easily. When I had Brandi, I had not heard of crate training. When I left the house, she would make a mess of one kind or another. It didn't matter if anyone else was at home or not. I am much older now and my family has 4 house dogs. I also no about crate training. It is one of the best things that I have learned about with regard to the care of animals. Depending on how long after the fact you found the mess "punishing" may or may not work. Each of our animals have their own crate. Whenever we leave home, unless we take them with us, they "crate up". If your routine has changed this could be upsetting your pet. Research crate training and see if it is right for your pet.

He misses you. Contrary to what some believe, crating your dog is the best way to assure him, provide him his own space and prevent his destructive behavior. It's like you having your own room to retreat to. Dogs are den creatures, like wolves or coyotes.
Crate training is simple. Get a crate large enough for him to be able to turn around in. Use the partition to make the space smaller at first, which will aid in potty training as well. Dogs do not like to eliminate where they sleep. As he adjusts and no longer has accidents in his crate, enlarge the area gradually until you can finally remove the partition altogether.
Since his behavior only occurs while you are gone, this should eliminate that problem. It is never too late to teach a dog to be crated. He will associate it with comfort while you are gone. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water and comfortable bedding. Also, you should take him to your vet to make sure it's truly a behavioral problem and not a physical disorder.

crating a dog doesnt solve a single damn thing. the reason it's making a mess is because the dang thing is bored out of his mind! he's spoiled! you absolutely can NOT punish an animal for anything, because they don't understand what they did wrong. putting your dog in a little kennel won't solve anything. buy him new toys and new treats to keep him occupied and happy when you are away. DONT crate your dog.

During the day, keep the dog in some kind of cage. A good size cage so it has enough room to move around and it won't be cramped. The dog may not like the cage at first, but it will get used to it. When you come home let your dog out and give it lots of love!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/am6Cw
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
