I don't know if it is from the heat or a green bisquit that my husband gave her but she has the runs and she is making a mess all over the house. She just gave birth on 6/6/06 and I was wondering if this could be the problem. She has an appointment to get her staples removed from the c-section she had but I was wondering in the mean time if someone could advise me on how to treat this. I kind of put two and two together with the bisquit because she was fine until she ate it. Her stool was green just like the bisquit. Now it is normal color but she is still having the runs. This will be day # 2 now. What should I do until I get her to the vet. She is eating and drinking ok. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am a little apprehensive about giving her peptobismol being that she is nursing right now. I don't know if it will be good for the pups.

you should go to the vet. they will give you some medication for this and a special diet for your dog until her diarrhea is gone.

my dog have a very sensitive stomach, everytime she ate something new, she would always throw up and have a diarrhea. we always have the vet check her out.

it could not be because she have puppies since she have a c-section. my dog have a diarrhea after she have puppies but its because she have normal delivery and ate the puppies placenta. my vet gave us a special diet for her. you should check on the vet especially that she is nursing, normal medication might be bad for the newborn puppies.

DO NOT give her pepto bismol! I work in a vet's office, and you should never give a dog a human medication, except for the occasional baby aspirin when prescribed by your vet.

There is a hamburger and rice diet we prescribe for our patients with diarrhea. Ask your vet about it, as I do not have it right in front of me right now. But the basic idea is that it's very, very little hamburger, used just to flavor the rice. Par-broil the hamburger (boil it in water) and drain it. They don't need it to be fried, or mixed with spices or anything!

Then mix it with very over-cooked, practically mushy white rice. I think (and I'm not positive) but I think the measurements are about 1/4 cup of hamburg to every 1 - 1 1/2 cups of rice. Also stop the green biscuits and see if the diarrhea doesn't stop, too.

If the diarrhea doesn't clear up, contact your veterinarian. Especially if you notice any blood or worms in the stool.

It could be a combination of both. I worked at a shelter, and most new moms had diarrhea. I would give it another day or two, then call the vet to see if there is something safe she can take while nursing. Like humans there are many things she won't be able to have b/c of her condition, so make sure you pass everything through the doc. Good luck and congrats.

You can bring whole milk to a barely boil, and when it has cooled just a bit, skim off the film on top.
Give her 1/4 -1/3 cup of this every few hours until the stools are firmer.

It's a funny thing. whole milk makes a suitable laxative, but when boiled and skimmed, it is a binder...funny, huh?
this remedy is also good to keep in mind for puppies when they have bowel problems.
Pepto is OK for a nursing mom, but she will most likely accept boiled milk better. I think it works better, too.
You can give it over food or as a warm drink.

My vet has told me to put my dogs on a diet of boiled chicken and rice. It works great and they love it.

I would take him/her in to see the vet if it keeps up. They loose alot of vitamins and minerals when they have diarrhea.
