I had a similar problem with my cats... To discourage them from drinking from the toilet bowl, I placed "Toilet Blu" in the toilet water tank (apart from turning the water in the bowl blue, its supposed to clean and disinfect the bowl - you can buy the stuff in any grocery). This simple move put off my cats from drinking water in the toilet bowl, since cats hate 'flavored' water! Now they drink only from the two bowls I provide for them. If the water in the bowls has gone stale, they just meow at me in protest and I go refresh their bowl!

My cat Midnight used to do the same thing. The reason your cat does so is because he sees and hears the water inside the toilet moving. It is exciting for some cats to see water running and prefer to drink from it than standing water. By any chance, do you see him stick his paws in his water bowl or play with the faucet when the water is running? If he does, then he is one of the rare cats that likes water and the sound of it. No matter how fresh the water in his bowl may be, it's not as exciting to drink from it. What I did to stop my cat from drinking out of the toilet is by closing the lid after I use it. It only takes a second of your time and will prevent him from getting sick, or accidentally falling in, especially when no one's around. I also got him a battery operated fountain that lights up, and he absolutely LOVES licking the water from it! I hope I was of great help to you and good luck!

Your cat is just being a cat and cats like fresh, cool, clean water. No matter how many times I clean out our cats water bowls and change the water during the day, they still want new and different water! We just keep the lid down on the toilet and our cats are prevented from drinking from our toilet.
One of our cats will put her paw into my houseplant watering can just to get fresh water! (It looks silly.) The other cat will sit in the kitchen sink when she wants extra water and MEOW until we make the water drip slightly so she can drink the drips.(Crazy but true.)

I had a cat that used to do the same thing they jump up on the toilet seat and they see there reflection and I think this is what draws their attention and they also like to bat at the water and watch the ripples in the water which then lead to (O well I am thirsty and this is water so Ill just drink from here). I just had to get into a habit of putting the toilet lid down.

Cats like really really fresh water. Both of my cats love the toilet water. Just watch before you go, and be careful flushing.

i have your answer. its the real answer, and i know this for a fact, being a cat owner and showsman myself. all animals are EXTREMELY sensitive to chemicals in water. your water from the tap might taste good to you...but it might taste aweful to your cat. your toilet and bath water might come from a different water system than your kitchen or bathroom sink. i'd do a little experimenting. buy bottled water...then try tap water...then the toilet water...and maybe even water from someone else's house. make sure you watch your cat's diet too. if it changes even the slightest bit, make changes and try to help your cat along! animals have their own personal instincts...if they need vitamin a, their body will tell them so, and they'll go find it somewhere. if they need different minerals from water or whatever else, they'll get it, and if they cant, they'll use a different material. listen and learn from your cat!!

If your cat's water is too hot or to cold, he or she might want to use the toilet more often. Maybe he or she finds it tasty. She might copy your dog if you have one.

Numerous reasons. He could like that its colder because of the porcelain, or he might like the taste of the chemicals in the water. But you should shut the lid.
