at 8 and being a retire child psychologist relax if it occurs more then once or twice then talk with the parents it may be that his basic structure of whats proper and improper hasn't been explained to him by his parents... ease up people children are naturally curious and explore things around them self's daily doing this doesn't mean he's headed down a path to deviant behavior

Could be normal to some point. Boys are weird about this and I just tell my 2 1/2 year old that he should not touch himself in front of other people (so he doesn't think the enjoyment is bad). You need to sit him down and explain that it's not acceptable to do this in front of other people. Let him know that he is not doing anything wrong but it is just not something that is done in front of someone. And "feel out" if there has been any sexual abuse that would lead him to do this. At 8 your are looking at the possibility of sexual abuse but kids are having sex at 10 and 12 now, so it is hard to judge.

You may want to seek the help of a psychologist in this instance.

It will catch you off guard every time but it is normal for them to check it out. They do however need to know when it is and is NOT appropriate! Do not encourage but don't make them think they are a bad person either!

He is touching himself, not others. He is simply curious, and there is nothing to worry about. And the exposure part is just to see what reaction he can get out of his audience. The more you react to it, the more he will do it.

Normal.
Let him know there is a place to do that- bedroom or bathroom. So he doesn't think it is ok to do it where ever he wants. Otherwise it will appear babdly.

well, if it's done in public, i would be concerned, but it's normal for children to explore their bodies and become aware of their body parts. according to freud, there are three stages of childhood body exploration: oral (sucking on stuff and putting stuff in their mouths-- allows them to breast feed, etc.), anal (learning how to control bowel movements--potty training), and phallic (exploration of reproductive organs). i don't know if this information helps you at all.
