Your writing communication is very good. I encourage you to keep practicing English.

I had a roommate who was Korean. All of her friends were Korean, she only used English when she had to. As a result, even after being in the States for 6 yrs, her English speaking skills were still poor. She needed to practice more, pure and simple.

Someone suggested reading aloud. That seems like a great idea! Read aloud to someone who speaks both English and your language so that they can help you with this. And remember, speak English with them, it will be tempting to speak your native language with them.

You will do better, with practice it will happen. My friend came here from Egypt and when he arrived, he could only read English but couldn't speak it. Three years later, his English was excellent. He watched tv, listened to the radio, read the paper, anything he could to improve. Be patient with yourself, it will happen for you too. Practice practice practice.

See if you can find a private tutor, or a friend who is Chinese-American and speaks your dialect. Also, public speaking classes at your college would help once you get some rudimentary skills. Classes might also be taught at community centers, depending on whether you're in a city with a large Chinese and Chinese-American population. Check with the Immigration Office as well. While you might be here on a student visa, they might have a class that you could take to help you improve your English, since being able to write and speak in that language is part of the requirements for becoming a citizen.

As stupid as this may sound. . . speak more.

English isn't a very easy language to learn - and the worst person to teach English is an American.

I suggest taking a speech class and get out more and meet people. It works wonders.

Trust that you speak much better English than I speak Chinese. You are doing fine, you make yourself understood. The only way to learn to speak a language is to....speak it, and speak it often..when you speak it enough, you think in that language, and it will become much easier. Practice, practice, practice.

I heard once, that the great British actor, Richard Burton, had a poor speaking voice growing up.
So to improve his English and his speaking voice, he would read aloud from books, It helped his English, his pronunciation, and his speaking voice.
Why don't you give that a try.

I would suggest getting a Chinese tutor. That way you can get English translated into your native tongue. At the same time practicing English.
Hope this helps.
