Yes I have shaved a cat. I worked at a shelter and if we got a horribly matted cat in due to neglect we would shave it. It is not recommended though because it is a very traumatic experience for the cats. (All of ours would have to be sedated) And then kept indoors, because the sun can give them a bad sunburn. I'm from palm springs and there were many long haired cats there that did just fine, just make sure you provide plenty of water and they'll be fine.

I shaved my cat only once and that was because her past owner had neglected her so bad she was matted, however normally it is not recommended to shave cats or infact dogs, other than the non-shedding kind because the hair is actually a protection against the sun and heat.
provide plently of water, and cool places (basement), frequent grooming will remove excess hair and help kitty feel better you may trim tummy hairs to help kitty cool by lying on floor but the hair on the back also protects from sun burn (well hopefully your kitties dont go outside really)

I don't have any cats, but one of my friends had a long haired cat that was regularly shaved for the summer. The cat seemed way more comfortable with shorter hair.

Ran a quick web search....didn't
see a while lot except this from cat fanciers web site.
I would probably leave the cats alone except for brushing and making sure fur doesn.t get matted.
If they get hot they find their little shady spots.
I would think that if cat was shaved it would make cat more susceptable to sundburn.
don't think we want that.
Matted fur is a perfect breeding ground for parasites and encourages inflammatory skin diseases. If your cat has matted fur, do not try to cut it off as you may injure the cat. Mats are difficult to comb out and may be painful. You may have to have the vet sedate and shave the cat. Do groom it regularly to prevent mats.

If the cat has to be sedated maybe it too traumatic a procedure for them.

I have a long haired cat and for the last 6 summers I shave him myself and he seems more comfortable. Call your local groomers and ask for prices.

there is no reason that you cant shave a cat. dont use your typical razor though! call down to your local groomer, and they'll do it for about $30-55. they blend the hair and make it look perfectly fine. your cat might have an issue with it the first couple of days, but he'll learn to love it. it just takes time. i show cats, and i know this stuff. when i fit my cats for her 2 shows a month, i set her up how i'd position her for the judge, tie her leash up that way, and fit her. its not hard. i blow-dry her hair, add my secret-solution (NO i'm not giving it away...thats how i win my shows for gorgeous fur), and my show cats are up and ready to go. i own an all black kitty and she's my main show cat. her fur needs cleansing about 2 times a month, when i do it. sure, she hates hearing the water run, but as soon as she's in the tub, she's in love with the warmth and she loves being clean. trust me, i know cats. if you put them on a set schedule, they'll learn to love it (MOST of the time) and they learn to deal with their personal schedules. if they dont like something, they'll tell you. study your cat, and check out it's personality. you'll learn what he/she likes and what he/she doesnt like, cats are very easy-going. they can take just about everything with a little time. thank you!

Yes, I have a beautiful black cat with thick fur and he sheds all over my house. I have had him shaved in the summer and he is none the worse for it. The vet had to sedate him so he wouldn't bite and it was around $30.

I don't know how much they charge, you can call around for estimats.
Or if you have someone to help you and a cat you know that won't turn on you (ie bite you or scratch you) you can do it yourself. My sister did this once to one of the cats we owned (not because it was a hot cat, but because we were young and she (sister) was being stupid) we only managed to get half of the cat done before he got fed up and ran....he looked really funny with his bottom half bald and his top half really hairy.

call another places and notice in case you come across somebody who will do it extra low-fee; you will desire to harm your cat with the clippers. have you ever tried brushing your cat popular? My cat sheds plenty to, so i think your discomfort, yet i attempt to comb her popular and it particularly enables. I did have a cat shaved as quickly as, yet she become very ill and it become reported by potential of the vet. I wasn’t there mutually as she become being shaved (i become 12 years previous and in college), yet she become very under pressure afterwards and appeared embarrassed for weeks afterwards lol. stable success.
