The heroes of the Old Testament are credited for really getting monotheism rolling. They preach of a God reluctant to give a name. Maybe the moral is: If there is only one, what is the use of a name. There is no need to distinguish this god from that god.

well, really, one can't put a name on God...
most or almost all of the names given in the bible is actually more on describing the characteristics of God rather than the real name...
like Jesus means saviour, Christ is the anointed, Messiah is the chosen one, Son of man describing his humanity, son of God describing His divinity, Melchezidek describing His ministry as a High Priest, Lamb of God describing His ministry as the ultimate sacrifice, Jehovah means the One with authority, Father as in relation to son, Son as one who inherits from the Father, in Psalms, there is Wisdom, and in John the Word...
In fact the closest coming to a name in the bible is found in Ex 3:14 I AM...
the thing is.. one can't put a name on God.. there is no one name that can describe God as a whole....each name describes part of Him that we can know and undrstand Him better..

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

actually, I don't think we know all the true names of God. in Jewish custom they take names very seriously, especially the name of God. it was too Holy to speak.
the Bible does give us some of the names of God, but if you look up the name, they all have a meaning.
