Yes! Area rugs are often used to cover up stains or just to add color to an otherwise drab room. And the good thing is, area rugs can go on any type of surface, whether it's a hardwood floor or an already carpeted area. If you don't like the rug, you can always remove it. It wouldn't cost you anything such as tearing up carpet and replacing it with hardwood flooring would. Good luck with your decorating!

First, I have short pile carpet in the living room and dining room. I put an area rug under my dining table and found the weight of the table caused the area rug to bunch up toward the table end due to the carpet pad below giving way. I put self adhesive tile under the corners of the area rug to help keep the corners down but the rug still bulges by the table footings. I now have decided to remove the carpet from the dining room and have the area rug stretched and cleaned by a professional before reinstalling.
So my answer to your question is that it's OK to put an area rug over your carpet so long as you don't have a heavy piece of furniture on top that would sink into the carpet padding and cause uneven pressure resulting in the rug bulging.

It depends how thick the fluffy carpet is. If it's more than a foot of fluff, I'd skip the area rug.
