We recently moved to a new house and our German Shepard who has always been a digger has now started to pull up the lawn with is mouth. He acts like he smells something and roots around a little bit and then just bites and pulls. Has anyone ever encounted this problem and if so how do we get it to stop?

Thanks.

he needs way more activity in his life.. give him a purpose, take him to Obedience lessons to give his mind something to think about.. more games with him etc.. These dogs where bred to HERD - this means they are VERY SMART and need to have their minds stimulated, if you dont do this for them.. they will find something else to do.. and clearly your dog has.

The reason he is digging could be he is bored or trying to releve the boredom by digging. Get him out and walk him at least 30 minutes everyday. Also, when you get back from your walk, take him out in the yard, and watch him. When he looks like he is going to begin to dig, slightly nudge at his throat area with your hand and while doing this make a 'tis type sound. Not too loudly, you don't want to scare/startle him. This will not only distract him from what he was about to do, but you will also be acting like a pack leader to him. If he stops trying to dig when you preform this action on him, do not immediately tell him he is a good boy, etc. That will come in time, which will be when you can let him in the yard and he does not even think about digging. He needs guidance in this area, and your the one that can give it to him. Also, play with him by throwing a ball, and you can also begin to openly hide the ball so he can find it. This too will get his mind stimulated and deter him from digging. These are all practices that must be repeated everyday. You will not be able to stop doing these exercises once you begin. If you do, be sure to immediately get him out for at least a walk. This will calm/tire him down a bit, and he won't be so apt to digging. But, as I said he if does try to dig after the walk, be near to him and slightly nudge him from doing the act, and don't forget to make like a little 'tis sound to reinforce the hand movement. Keep repeating this, and you'll be surprised how he will not dig anymore, (as long as you keep reinforcing this). Good luck.

a minimum of she's choosing up the poop and no longer leaving in there. even although, it is elementary courtesy to no longer permit you canines poop in different peoples yards, in particular while there are diverse communal grassy components. If the HOA won't enable a border or fence, are you able to talk with them approximately this dilemma? in all hazard on the subsequent assembly they could be waiting to make a sparkling rule that domestic canines can not be walked on others components (i assume that's stated as Trespassing, is it no longer?) She could desire to additionally be making a decision on up her trash she leaves at the back of. some persons truly lack unique experience and suitable etiquette.

I haven't heard of it but there could be many reasons why he is doing it. Have you tried using the penny can to get him to stop? Put a couple of pennies in a soda can and tape the hole shut. As soon as he starts, throw the can hard at the ground beside him (don't hit him!) and say No. Repeat until he stops.

I have experienced two things here. One of my dogs does this if he finds a mole hole in the lawn. The other will do this if he is bored. The bored one now has a toy box of his own to help alleviate boredom.

He's digging for the new suv Volvo buried. J/K

My dog did that 4 months ago. Mine was eating the grass, which means his stomach was hurting.

You might want to take him to the vet just to make sure.

Our German Shephard did that too. It turns out that we had field mice (in our yard) that he was chasing. The exterminator got rid of them, and he stopped doing it.
