Most red wines are at their best at cool room temperature, 62° to 65°F (16 to 18°C). Once upon a time, in drafty old English and Scottish castles, that was simply room temperature (actually it was probably warm, high noon room temperature!). Today, when you hear room temperature, you think of a room that's about 70°F (21°C), don't you? Red wine served at this temperature can taste flat, flabby, lifeless, and often too hot — a burning sensation from the alcohol.
Ten or fifteen minutes in the fridge can do wonders to revive red wines that have been suffering from heat prostration. But don't let the wine get too cold. Red wines served too cold taste overly tannic and acidic, decidedly unpleasant. Light, fruity red wines, such as Beaujolais, are most delightful when served slightly chilled at about 58° to 60°F (14° to 15.5°C).
Are you wondering how to know when your bottle is 58° to 60°F? You could buy a nifty digital thermometer that wraps around the outside of the bottle and gives you a color-coded reading. Or you could buy something that looks like a real thermometer that you place into the opened bottle (in the wine's mouth, you might say). Just feel the bottle with your hand and take a guess. Practice makes perfect.

With reference to wine room temperature is 68f, which goes back to the days before central heating. But Ronin is right, it's better a little cooler.
I was in a restaurant in Sri Lanka and ordered a bottle of red wine. It was hot. When I complained to the waiter he said 'red wine is always served at room temperature. The kitchen was about 90f. He said 'Ok, don't worry, I'll bring you a bucket of ice.

Not chilled, not heated. Red wines should be stored in the temperature you won't feel cold or hot. It is roughly 21 -23 degrees Celcius or 69 - 73 degrees Fahrenheit or 294 - 296 Kelvin.

Room temperature is supposed to be the constant temperature found on the cellars in France. They all are undreground facilities where the temperature is always around 60-65 degrees. You just need to dig almost 15 feet and you'll have your appropiate "room temperature"

i'm in contract with you. Room temp for wine potential cellar temps contained in the olden days, which became more effective round fifty 5-65F. So i have continuously in simple terms positioned a bottle of pink contained in the refrigerator about 40 5 minutes previously serving. only sufficient to convey the temp down somewhat.
