"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in the good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on the exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the persons becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American.....there can be no allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else, isnt an American at all. We have no room but for one flag, the American flag. We have no room but for one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American People."
- President Theodore Roosevelt, 1907

I can't agree with Teddy in this case, because he suggests that we are "giving" these people the right to become American (as if that's such a great need in this world), but by doing so, immigrants must conform to the ways of Americans in every facet (Language, flag, and loyalty...ect.). This sounds alot like a familiar move by Hitler. Do you really want to take America to a dictatorship instead of being "free", as I'm sure you think you are?
Now let me say something about this moron above me, here. The Chinese aren't "clamoring" to learn the American language. They are taking great measures to have a high percentage of their population learn or have some knowledge of English so that they can accomodate the hundreds of thousands of visitors in 2008 for the Olympics.
It just happens that I live in China and get to see first hand just what exactly goes on here. I will not deny that the people are learning English for reasons of business as well, but the quote above about how they are clamoring to learn American language really tugged on the old short and curlys for me. Sounds like the amble blabber of a self-absorbed American to me!

He was referring to immigrants. Those who have legally immigrated here come in good faith and want to be Americans. The problem lies with illegal immigrants who do not want citizenship, only the jobs and money that can be made here. They want the benefits the U.S.A. offers but their allegiance is to Mexico. They want to send the money back to their families, save as much as they can to establish a little business of some kind back home. They say the U.S. has exploited and robbed parts of their country so they will use us now. We do have only one flag, one language and only one sole loyalty. Those who do not agree shouldn't be here in the first place. It should be considered an INVASION if people from another country come here and fly their flag in our faces, ranting in another language their loyalty to their country and draining our tax money for their benefit.

I agree. Many mexicans (illegal) are loyal to Mexico not the USA. Its basically "we're just here for the money, we don't want to really be americans. Just want the american benefits". And this was shown with the Mexican flag in the protest.
The illegal immigrants aren't assimilating. In fact I think we should stop a lot of legal immigration. Slow down the process at least and let a few south americans get stuck in south america and they will be forced to try to make South america a better place.
I am in favor of people coming to the USA for a better life, but theres a point where you have to help and save your own country, your own relatives, etc..
mexicans, legal and illegal, should try to work together and end the corruption, overpopulation, pollution, etc.. in Mexico I believe.
All our ancestors forgot their homelands and united under the USA flag. But the illegals don't do that-- they are not truly immigrants.

Very sound and solid. This does not mean that some one had to abandon their heritage or language, but merely assimilate to the point that they can be a productive and useful member of the society that they live in. Otherwise they will help to factionalize this country, diluting the traits that made us great.
It is very poignant that the Chinese are clamoring to learn American language and cultural etiquette to be more adaptive to business dealings here, and so many Immigrants fight tooth and nail to have us change for them.

Amen to Roosevelt!!!
I couldnt agree more....becoming a citizen to a country is a serious thing to do. If that is what you want to do?, it shouldnt be a problem assimilating or displaying the flag from your country of your choice.

He was one of my favorite Presidents, if not my favorite. Did you know that other than saying he led the charge at San Juan Hill and that he was President, he has been cut out of school history books in California? They even removed books about him from my kids' school library.
Apparently as a hunter he was not PC.
