My cat sometimes brings up dirty laundry from the basement. He drags it up..and leaves it in the living room or hallway. Is he trying to communicate something to me?

Be thankful it's only laundry he's dragging in. Lots of times my cats have dragged in small animals (chipmunks, mice, birds)...dead or alive. One time I was sleeping and heard a strange noise that woke me up. It was my cat eating a mouse right next to my face. No clue why they do that. People say it's they are sharing their bounty with you.

From what I've heard and read it seems that when it's a female cat it can be sometimes be linked to their "mothering instinct" as in they are carrying their babies around and leaving them in a the same safe place. Another thought is that it could be tied to their hunting instinct. Many outdoor cats will kill their small prey (mice, rabbits, birds...) and leave them on the doorsteps of their owners while predominantly indoor cats may compensate for this by carrying other small objects around in their house in place of the actual prey.

LOL!
He's probably just having fun. My cats draw paper towels, underwear, bread, and whatever else they can find aroud the house all the time. Your cat is probably just intrigued by the textures and smells and fun-factor of the laundry, and plays with it.
Alternatly, perhaps he's sleeping in it, and then waking up and dragging bits with him.

Cats are unique. He may be telling you that he likes whatever smell is on the clothes. Or, more likely, he is simply seeking attention. He has learned that you pay attention to him when he carries around the laundry.

Cats form extreme attachments to their owners. Your smell is on your clothing and it is very comforting to your cat to be near or on a piece of clothing that smells like you. Many cats will carry around one of their owners socks or something, sleep in the clothes hamper etc. or have a favorite shirt of yours that they claim as your own, which they drag over to their bedding.

Your cat probably likes having his "people's" scent around, and dirty laundry carries a person's scent!

Female cats do that when they lose a litter of babies to soon. Males do it because they are dominate over who's clothes they carry around, it is a scent thing.

Cats and some Dogs like to bring us "GIFTS" usually its a dead animal...I think your cat is acting out some primal script and presenting you with a token of affection.

I have no idea... my cat rolls around on my dad's dirty work shirt. But she doesn't dive into any other dirty laundry.

your cat is being a cat.

this means it will bat at imaginary bugs, play with things other than it's toys, pick up strange habits for no reason and drop them just as quickly, and sleep where ever is most inconvenient for you.
