This means that there are seven separate sections to your meal.
Typically:
First Course: appetizer
Second Course: soup
Third Course: salad
Fourth Course: sorbet to cleanse the palate
Fifth course: meat, such as poultry
Sixth Course: meat, red meat or fish
Seventh Course: dessert

I think this refers to a fancy dinner. But it mainly just means you get seven food selections like --salad, soup, the actual meal en tray and a dessert. Yes--and sorbet.
I think the main course would add up to be more than one food on that plate, since you would not get just a steak or whatever--you would usually get side dishes as well like a baked potato and or vegetables.

This huge meal with 7 courses
Like each course being: 2 Appetizers, Main entree, 2 sides, 2 desserts
All being serve one at a time. One plate only in front of you and a plate replacing plate after plate.
You may see this at a fancy banquet or a wedding. The courses are just enough to keep you full until the next course. I hope you will experence this one day!!

It was a meal traditionally served beginning with an appetizer, followed by a soup, salad, main course meat, main course fish, dessert, and lastly fruit and nuts. The dishes were carried out by servants one at a time and each dish was savored. The meal would last up to 2 hours. It started back in the time of one of the King Louie's.

Here is a link with an example of a seven course meal.
Indeed..it is a meal which is extravagant..and provides seven different times during which food is served during one meal.
It is typically a meal associated with a black tie event.

I've been told that the seven course meal draws its inspiration from the Seven Virtues (faith, hope, charity, temperance, prudence, fortitude and justice), but there are also thirteen course meals that are inspired by Jesus and his 12 Apostles.
