Depends on what you mean by reliable. Are they less likely to get attacked by hackers? Yes. But the new XP Pc's are very reliable. I own both a home and media center one . Haven't crashed either. Also have enough security on them both that it would take an act of congress to get to them. Not sure if it could even then.
You just have to learn to 'lock' your computer front door same as you do your house and car.
But if you want an Apple. Buy one.Tthey are good computers.

I love macs. I've had nothing but macs for the last 12 years or so. They are very user friendly, I've never had issues with 'freezing', and most viruses work on windows platforms. Currently I have an emac and the mac mini, both fantastic.
As I always say"I don't do windows"

Apple computers are built better and have higher quality parts inside them. Get a PowerPC with an Intel Processor or a G5 processor, you'll be able to add parts to it.

I work with macs, and I can tell you this...stick with the PC.
