The main differance as the stinging spine on the tail of the stingray, also (i'm not sure about this, just going on experience) stingrays seem to prefer warmer soputh waters, skates liking the more northerly, I used to live in NY and commonly fished in Maine and Mass and caught lots of skate, but since moving to florida I have caught only stingrays. And like the guy above said, stingray tastes a lot like scallops if cooked right, don't know about skate, never bothered to eat one

I've fished saltwater for a long time. however I never took the time to examine either. let it suffice to say the look pretty much the same when you drag 'em up and cut them loose.

They make artificial scallops out of one...or both for all I know.

They're either damn big or have the most lethal looking tail next to a Stegosaurus that I've ever seen.

Rays are usually bigger, and have poison in their rear poker, and give live birth. Scates are small no poison and lay eggs.
