I am just curious. I won't lie and I say I haven't accidentally swallowed my share of salt water while visiting the beaches of Oahu. But, I don't think the occasional accidental swallow hurts anything. No, my question is about drinking salt water in general. How unhealthy is it?

The minerals and salts in the water dehydrates the body the more water you drink.

It's just like swallowing melted table salt... Infact, thats what the ocean is lol. I would rather be concerned with what else is in the water besides the salt your swallowing. Swallowing salt water wont do any harm unless your drinking gallons by the day

Take a lot of salt into your body and your metabolism very quickly goes into crisis. From every cell, water molecules rush off like so many voluntary firemen to try to dilute and carry off the sudden intake of salt. This leaves the cells dangerously short of the water they need to carry out their normal functions. They become, in a word, dehydrated. In extreme situations, dehydration will lead to seizures, unconsciousness, and brain damage. Meanwhile, the overworked blood cells carry the salt to the kidneys, which eventually become overwhelmed and shut down. Without functioning kidneys you die. That is why we don't drink seawater.

First many people drink water and many eat salt with their food. But as far as drinking a lot of this see this site under "anti-water."

Salt-water gives you brain damage... that is true. But an accidental small amount shouldn't harm you too much.

In small quantities, salt water will not hurt you. In large qualtities , it will kill you. Salt water is not hydrating , like normal water, but it is dehydrating. In small amounts, it is fine. Gador Aid is mostly salt water. It does not kill people. If that is all you drink, though it will dehydrate you.

I don't think it's actually unhealthy, but it will dehydrate you and make you thirsty. Because of the salt.

Well if you take in a lot, the sodium probably will damage something slowly. If it doesn't happen often there should be nothing wrong with it...other than the taste.
