I'm not a big fan of hot milk unless it's in cofee.. but then that defeats the purpose... however cold milk does calm me. Try something that your brain has to work at in order to be stimulated like reading... the box with the pretty lights (tv, computer, ipod) doesn't count! What always worked for me in high school was doing my "required readings" for english... put me out in 2 sec flat! lol

If you like words, this has helped me. Sometimes I turn the television on to a documentary-type channel and set it up to turn off automatically in an hour. I listen to the speakers and try to spell the words in my head that they are saying, or I might listen to a channel that is in a different language and try to figure out what they are saying. Other times I go through the alphabet trying to find words beginning with the letter that fit a theme. For example, words that describe moods or types of transportation. I may add other rules such as the number of syllables allowed. (I make exceptions for letters like X , Z, Q, etc. and allow the word to have the letter in it anywhere.) Sometimes I try to remember in the exact order everything I said and did that day. (That works best if it was a calm, routine day.) These exercises usually wear my brain out in a half hour or less and I fall asleep.

I think drinking hot milk can just sort of be soothing and make you relaxed, which can in turn make you tired. And I usually find that if you lay down and read a boring book, in a dark place with a little lamp or something you can fall asleep pretty easily.

Believe it or not, yes, warm milk helps in addition to turkey. So, eat them together and you may notice the difference. They both have an ingredient in them called L-tryptophan (spelling?).
When I have had a hard time sleeping, I used to use a relaxation tape until I was able to do the relaxing on my own. You would not believe how well that works also.
Try not to rely too much on sleeping pills, but short-term use might be OK. Some will try temporary use of Tylenol PM (with benadryl), but check with your physician before you try medication.

Meditation and I listen to the Insight CD's. It's binural beats that put your body into a deep state of relaxation.
Yes hot milk helps in putting you to sleep. Milk is also full of sugar calories and will make you gain weight while you are asleep. You can drink hot tea, like Tension Tamer without sugar.

Eat something high in calcium, like milk, with something high in carbs, like cereal.
Soft instrumental music, laying down, and darkening the room also help.
If you have a lot on your mind, try making a few notes about what is bothering you.
Chamomile tea puts me right out, but if you don't have it on hand try the previous ideas.

If you're talking about occasional sleeplessness' then relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, stretching and listening to "meta-music" has been helpful for me - they always tell you not to fight it just get up and do something...
One way to make sure to fall as sleep at night is to force yourself to get up REAL early : )
