At Nine years old, I found out I was allergic to garlic. Doctors I went to could not figure out why my body rejected garlic. When garlic hits my system it acts as a spong, I become dehydrated, weak, light headed and very ill. I will get sick (vomit) till my body gets rid of every bit of garlic that is in my system. Yes, it is a burden sometimes. Most of my favorite foods has garlic in them. When grocery shopping, I have to check on the labels of different foods (ingredients) to make sure there is no garlic substances otherwise I may have to face the consequences and end up in the hospital. Other reactions are, fever, hot sweats, chills. It can take up to 2 weeks before my body fully recovers. I have studied other web sites (Allergies to Garlic) and viewed other people's reactions. Not one- experienced the same symptoms as me. What do you make of this? { My Family jokes with me and calls me a Vampire....LOL Which is quite amusing.} Do you know anyone who has these same reactions?

Of course, the only way I can have my favorite foods is to make it homemade. There are some sauces for pizza that do not have garlic. There are ways to work around my problem. I can live without garlic.

Those of you who 'think' it's all in my mind...think again! After going to the hopital at nine years old a doctor had came to the conclusion I was allergic to garlic. The Dr. had to give me something to stop me from vomiting and to reduce my fever. They even didn't recommend garlic pills because my my reactions were so severe and didn't want to take the chance of me becoming ill all over again. The Dr. did ask me what did I eat in the past 12 to 24 hrs. My parents told him " Just spegetti with garlic bread." This is how the Dr. came up with the conclusion. At that age I did like garlic bread. Especially homemade garlic bread. I was sick for a week before my parents took me to the hospital. They though it was just a flu bug...There was a time recently where I eat someting with garlic in not knowing there was garlic in it. OMG...that was a horror show. While resting I had drank plently of ice water. In about a week and a half my body slowly had returned to normal.

Not to garlic but with other foods. You are definitley doing the right thing by preparing your own foods and are being very cautious. I have food allergies and have found if I cook it, I know what's in it! It does make it a bit more difficult to go to restaurants or parties becuase we cannot always control what the chef or host puts in there. Always better to play it safe than sorry. I am sure if your post stays active long anough, you will be pleasantly surprised to find others who share your allergy...but to different degrees of sensityvity to the substance...Isn't it always to the flavors we love that our body rejects! If I truly despised the foods I was allergic to, it wouldn't be as tough. Murphy's law! Take care.

that sucks bc then you can't have pizza or garlic knots.. omgah i woudl die... you are a vampire. do you hate sunlight as well?

i dont have that problem but i guess its just an alergic reaction. every body is going to be different so the reactions are goign to be different. it can just be all in your mind because my cousin used to say he didn't like peanuts then his mom started putting them in things bc they are healthy and he'd be like does this have peanuts because i'm allergic even though he wasn't. he just didn't want to be tricked into eating peanuts. now he gets full allergic reactions its probably because his mind has said no peanuts no peanuts no peanuts and now he gets reactions to peanuts...
