Two things lead to most topped shots. One thing you can do is taking something the size of a dime and pretend that the golf ball. The concentration and the swing speed you use to hit the small item is the same you should use when you hit the golf ball. Remember to concentrate on the bottom part of the ball not the top.
reasons for topping
1.When you start taking the club back lifting your body up. This is done by straitening the knees. Try to keep them bent the entire time. The ball is 1.5 inches so it only takes a little movement to cause a top. Here is how you try to prevent this – Take some practice swing hitting something the size of penny. You have to concentrate on it to make sure you hit it. That is the same thing you need to do with the golf ball. You want that concentration to keep you from moving away from the ball.
You have to keep that left arm straight. You bend it ½ and inch and your in the middle of the ball. This is where you use your hand eye coordination. The right arm just keeps things going, don’t let it over power your left or you will get those deep bone jaring divots. You do not want that.

when you go into your backswing put all of you weight on your back foot and on your down swing put all your weight on your front foot and don't be afraid to take some ground it is a good also don't take your eye off the ball the whole even after you hit it look at the ground then find your ball in the air. hit em well

The biggest reason for topping the ball is because your pulling up out of the swing.. Keep your head down your eye stay on the ball. Force yourself to do this even after you hit the ball to break the habit of coming up out of the shot.

Rather than "keep your head down," I find it important to keep your head steady in one spot during your backswing. Be sure the ball isn't too far back in your stance as well.
Also be sure to keep your eye on the back of the ball.
This seemed to help me when I had this problem.

Concentrate on making a divot. You might even practice without a ball. Just try to slice a little off the turf. It's important during the striking of the ball to be hitting just slightly lower than where the ball sits. So practice taking divots on purpose.

I was topping the ball because I would take my practice swings at a different distance than when I go to hit the ball. Make sure the distance between your feet and the practice spot is the same as the distance between your feet and the ball. And don't swing to much harder when hitting the ball then when you practice.

Most tops happen because you are not shifting your weight to the left side after impact. Put a tee down near grass level and swing your club at the tee, Try to pop tee out of the ground. I have done this with my irons for years and really seems to help me.

The main the reason you are topping the ball is that you are straightening your legs on your downward swing. You myst keep your same body position throughtout the swing. Hope this help.....

Stay down on the ball. Keep your knees slightly bent, keep ypur *** down, and don't move you head and keep it down and over the ball.
