Gatorade is mostly water of course, with added sodium and flavorings in addition to the glucose/carbohydrate energy it is famous for, both have a place in the sports world. water is a basic need, Gatorade is made to supplement with additives needed to sustain activity better than water alone, about 6-8% added carbs, sodium (lost by perspiration, aspiration and urination)and even other trace minerals (as in the endurance formula) Overall , Water is the choice for daily hydration, Gatorade would be more use full while active in hot weather for sustained periods of time. as far as healthy, gatorade is mainly water, but there is a signifigant amount of sodium. If you have been advised to watch the salt, you should consult a doctor before using .

Weather it is healthier depends on what you are doing. Sitting on the couch watching TV drink water working or playing hard Gatorade will restore some of the electrolytes (fancy term for a family of salts) and some of the carbohydrates lost thru muscle activity and sweat. Either way Gatorade is much better then coolaide or soda.

Gatorade claims to put electrolytes back into your body which rehydrates you faster. It was first put use during a Florida (hence "Gator"ade) college football game in the seventies. The players who used the product were able to get back into the game quicker. I've used the product and think it has merit.

Gatorade has dyes. Water doesn't. So actually gatorade is much worse for you.

Water has no nutrients in it but our bodies need it.
Gatorade has electrolytes to help replenish your body faster. Its not good for your teeth though.
