The double sided discs can be used as well if you can find one. Because it is the same format as a normal DVD but has two sides where data can be recorded.

The DVD + is the newest format which is more reliable than DVD -, but DVD -R or RW can be played on almost 93% DVD players, but +R/RW can only be played on 80% DVD players.

The R is the Once recordable disk and RW is the Re-writable disk.

Yes 3". No double layer. I have a package of DVD-RW discs and I want to be able to save them and play them in any DVD Player.

double side yes, double layer probably not.
+RW is newer than -RW and is more able at managing multiple sessions. it is also slightly less compatible as older players may only read -R/ -RW.
the 505 does not seem to be compatible with -RW discs though. only +RW/-RW/-R (from BHPHOTO.com descirption)
