I am also a college student... who has to travel to attend the wedding

How much is appropriate?

Please none of this "as much as you feel" or "as generous as you want to be stuff" ...

I am looking for a number! an average! Just what you think or would spend in my situation..

Thanks a lot!

yikes! i have been in this situation myself, so i can completely relate! weddings are expensive, and when you are the best man (or maid of honor) all of the preliminary parties fall on you to throw. and then, when you are a college student during all of this (like i was) it makes things near impossible to afford.

i say 50 to 75 bucks is what you should shoot for. you have already undoubtedly spent money on pre-wedding stuff (bachelors, tux, etc). if you are worried about wanting to get something that looks pricey...but fits within that range, i suggest a trip to tiffany's and picking up an ice bucket. im pretty sure they are 70 bucks, but it is a rather impressive gift. otherwise, grab something off their registry for that amount. it should be more than enough.

and good luck with your speech! :)

Since you are the best man and should really know the couple well - at least the groom. You should get something personal to them. Don't worry about what it costs, instead give it some serious thought.
What can you give them that they probably wont get from anyone else? A scrap book of photos from thier dating years? A bottle of champagne and massage oil for their wedding night? A framed picture of them from an old photo that you've always thought was cute?
His and Her's bathrobes? Tickets to a special show or great amusement park?

Think about what you can give them because you have such a personal relationship with them that they wont be getting as a wedding gift from anyone else. Some of the most thoughtful gifts you can give the couple, cost very little.

First off, I would suggest looking at their gift registry to see what's on there and what the price range is. Personally, I try to find something that's the middle of road in their price range. I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy a bunch of their plate settings, but maybe pick up some wine glasses that they registered for or try some nice looking napkin holders. Of course, all of this is dependant on if they registered and what they registered for.

It is very subjective as to how much you spend but I know that I spent between $75 and $100 Canadian for the last wedding I was at and I was the "unofficial" wedding coordinator for her.

I say at least $50 check & see if they have a gift registry that helps to choose something or personalize it to that persons likes (art/ wedding theme/ books are always great & a jewelery)

There is no set formula or price range that is appropriate for gifting. People should gift according to their ability and how they feel about the couple.

You could buy massage oils for their honeymoon. It's not exspensive, but it's something they could use and really enjoy!! Bath and Bodyworks has a great selection....the lavender is great!! You could also buy them some bath oils and salts. This would only cost maybe $20-$30.

put $50 in a card, and you're good. They know you're a college student, and probably aren't rich.
