Pinot Grigio(Pinot Grey) is a variety of grapes used in wine making.

Pinot Gris is known from The Middle Ages in Burgundy region from whence it spread, arriving in early Switzerland and in Hungary by 1300. It reached Germany by the end of the 16th century. Dry means "not sweet". If you are looking for a white wine that is light in flavor and just slightly sweet there are quite a few. I would recommend that you try others over time and find what YOU like. I would suggest other Pinot Grigio's or Sauvignon Blanc if it doesn't say "dry". Maybe Moscato, although some of those are very sweet. Riesling would be good. The wines I mentioned are near to what you like, but the winemaker at each winery does it a little different. You are going to find the ones that suit you. Most will probably they will cost more than Barefoot which is made by Gallo.

Pinot Grigio = Pinot Gray

pinot
type of grape vine used in wine-making, 1912, Amer.Eng. variant spelling of Fr. pineau (attested in Eng. from 1763), from pin "pine (tree)" + dim. suffix -eau. So called from the shape of the grape clusters.

Grigio (Italian) = gris (French) = gray

The names Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris mean Grey Pinot in Italian and French respectively. 'Pinot' refers to the characteristic pine cone shaped bunch of this group of varieties.

This variety closely is related to Pinot Noir variety and is believed to be a mutation of Pinot Noir. In fact in the vineyard Pinot Grigio is difficult to distinguish from its putative ancestor until the berries ripen when those of the Grigio will have much less pigment. There is another variety, Pinot Blanc which has little or no pigment in the berries.

There is considerable clonal variation within the variety. Jancis Robinson says that the variety hardly knows if it is a dark or a light grape. It has several synonyms including Burot and Malvoise in France and Rulander and Tokayer in Germany.

In Europe the variety is widely planted. Given the inherent variation and geographic dispersion it is hardly surprising that a wide range of wine styles are produced from it. In Alsace under the name of Tokay d'Alsace, it produces a rich, almost oily wine. In Northern Italy the Pinot Grigio's are light and even spritzig. Under the name of Rulander in Germany it produces wines somewhat similar to white burgundies.

This is directly from a book by Konrad Ejbich who is a very well known Canadian wine writer.

Pinot Gris (vinifera) - This natural mutation of Pinot Noir produces full-bodied wines with a rich, golden colour and a noble scent that can be as simple as honeyed pears or as fragrant and complex as ripe and spicy Gewurztraminer. In genreal, it prefers a warm climate, and is notorious for rapidly losing acidity as sugars rise at harvest time. Nevertheless, in cool climates with cold fall nights, it can produce deliciously spicy late-harvest wines that become more complex with age. In the past, it was overlooked by Canadian growers; however, today more of this fine variety is finding its way into Ontario vineyards. The worst thing that cna happen to this variety is to have it pushed into producing high volumes of tart, flavourless wine, often called Pinot Grigio. This wine should be thick and oily in texture with concentrated flavours and potential to improve in flavour, with up to 20 years aging. (a.k.a. Grauburgunder, Rulander in Austria; Pinot Grigio in Italy; Szurkebarat in Hungary, Tokay d'Alsace, Tokay Pinot Gris in France).

As you can see this grape is known by many names in many different countries. It's not a bad white wine but it's not my favourite. It's also a very hit and miss wine - it's either really good or REALLY bad. Hope that helps.

Dry does indeed mean 'not sweet' for wine. You might try pinot gris, sauvignon blanc or chenin blanc. They're all crisp, clean, dry whites. Or just try better bottles of pinot grigio. You could try chardonnay, but I have a feeling you won't like it since it's a heavier white that generally tastes buttery and oaky. But it never hurts to experiment yourself! :)
