As a show dog owner, my dogs nails need to be perfect.

Best to use the rechargeable Dremmel because it is a lot quieter and won't grind down the nail as fast as the electrical ones.

Start with a fine grind sanding belt on the lowest speed and just lightly touch the ends of your dogs nails, while holding the dog's toe firmly to reduce the vibration which may be uncomfortable for him. Do NOT use a grinding stone, they get too hot and could burn your dog's foot.

If his nails are clear, when you see the pink, stop just below that. If his nails are dark, this is more difficult because you must guestimate where the quick would be... remember less is more.

The shape of his nails should be natural and flat on the bottom.

It is always better to take less off than too much.

I do my italian greyhounds nails once a week, and it takes less than 5 minutes to do all his nails, and he relaxes completely while i am doing it.

Praise your dog a lot when you are done.

After doing this weekly, in a few months your dog will allow you to do his nails with no problem.

Personally, I prefer this method to the guillotine because it is much more exact.

I also do my dog's nails with the Dremmel. It is quick, easy, and gets better results!! No more jagged edges after the trim.
There are many web sited on how to do it and getting started. If you buy a nog nail grinder fron a supply catalog, it usually comes with good instructions. Each dog is different. Some have no problem from the start, some never like it.
If you have a dog with any kind of hair around the paws...put a knee-high stacking over the entire foot. It lets the nails poke through, but you avoid the "problem" of getting fur caught in the grinder!!!!!!!!!
I am currently starting my 6 week old puppies on grinding. They do not mind it at all!!!!!

It IS possible to use a dremmel ti trim your dog's toenails, though it's very difficult and it's easy to grind down to the quick. Dremmels are mainly used by showdog handlers to create a perfectly rounded toenail, but for pet owners, it's much simpler, faster, and safer to use a doggie nail clipper. This way, you can just lop off the ends.

Very carefully, and only if the dog will let you.
Put a sand paper attachment on the dremmel and start it.
Grind the toe nails a little at a time in the natural shape they already have.
Stop before they get too short and praise your doggie for being so brave.

If your dog has never had this done before, ease into it. Start by letting them check it out while it's off. Then turn it on, but don't use it on them right away. Another good thing to do while it is on, is rest it on their leg or foot so they get used to the vibration. Once you're both ready, have the dog sit or lie down. Then just use it on the ends to soften. (I feel I get the best results when I clip the nails first, then use the dremmel to just soften the edges.)

For gods sake dont use dremmel... use orbital sander. Honestly, dogs nails need to be clipped much like human nails just not nearly as close as us.

The same way you use a dremmel as a toothbrush.

The best way is to buy a pair of dog nail trimmers. They are easy to use! Plus you have to be careful not to do their nail too short or they will bleed.
