Dogs learn things from sniffing those areas, and one of the things they learn is the other animals health problems - if this is a constant thing, I'd consider taking your older dog to the vet to check if something serious might be wrong with him.

I have a puppy (Charlie), is 4 months old, I live in an apartment and there is another older dog (Linda) that lives in the building and doesn't have an owner but has lived all its life here, the thing is, when I brought Charlie (2 months ago), Linda was jealous because we were very lovely with Charlie, but we didn't stop loving her as well, as always. Charlie always want to play with her, and he's always sniffing Linda although she hates it, sometimes Linda is laying in front of the door and Charlie is in the other side of the door and starts barking at her but in a good way like saying "I want to play with you" but she always barking him back like saying "don't bother me", and sometimes she even bites him.

Nowadays, I see that they are getting along in a better way, more than before, I'm not saying that they're like best buddies but Linda is getting used to see Charlie everyday with us.

They're like us, older ones never want to play with the younger, and you have to know that the older maybe is feeling like he's being put behind or replaced by the new one, is a matter of time and patience, until they get used to live together, to respect each other, and you have to help them treating them with the same privileges, meanwhile try to keep them away from each other specially when they are on their own to avoid any accident. Good Luck

Sounds like the main problem is age-- what 50-year-old likes to be in the same room with a hyper 5-year-old?

My husband and I haved this problem when when we go to his parents' house- they have a dog that is about the same age as your older dog, and when our dog (the older one is 3) was younger, she'd try to play with the old one, and Tinker (the older dog) would get pretty upset- it got to the point that Tinker would growl if she even saw Shela (our dog) comming in her direction.

My suggestion is to keep them separated when you aren't around, and well-supervised when you are around. Watch for signs that your older dog is getting frustrated...

Another idea- find or make a place that the older dog can go to get away from the puppy... the older dog may start spending all his time there...

I had that problem with my females. When they do fight you have to let them now your in charge and your not happy. Separate rooms, cages, ect. after their fight. Unfortunately, even though the younger dog will learn his place, they may still have problems from time to time. My females ended getting along great, but every once in a while they did what I was told by my Vet as establishing King, in my house, Queen of the House. Unfortunately in most of the animal kingdom there always has to be someone on top, and they will fight from time to time to make that clear!
