I know this is the stereotypical response to your question, but yes, don't cut it, don't overstyle it (that will cause breakage which will eventually end in split ends and nappy-ness), and always trim up every 4-6 weeks (the tiniest bit - the reason behind this is, when your hairs start to split, and yes, they eventually will unless you live in a dark cave, when your hair grows, the split starts to get longer and longer as your hair does...thats why its always a good idea to clip off all the "dead stuff" to prevent any more breakage than you'll get anyway).
There are many products out there that claim to help hair grow faster but they are just thick conditioners.....none has been proven to grow hair any faster than if you just left it alone. African-Americans have an especially hard time getting hair to grow because of perms and chemicals they receive to straighten and style hair....if you can help it, try to style your hair with little products as possible, so you are not clogging your hair folicles. Good luck on your new do!

Drink lots of water and take a good multivitamin. Don't eat stuff that's bad for you. Exercise. If you have a relaxer, don't get one before 8 weeks, I don't care how much new growth you have. Start wrapping your hair at night. Throw away your curling iron and replace it with a CHI ceramic iron (the ceramic heat is actually very good for your hair). Get your hair trimmed about 1/4 of an inch with every relaxer and you'll be on your way to long locks in no time

CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF...cut your hair! (well, just keep your ends trimmed, every 3 weeks to a month) this will help in keeping your hair healthy you have no idea how much it works! Also keep i conditioned (especially in the dry heat of the summer), mositured between washes, and dont stress you hair but getting styles that weigh down your hair with products like hair gel/spray, etc....also the smaller the braid the more tension it places on your hair so dont get braids to small
as far as products...i've heard that the Carol's Daughter line of products os AWESOME www.carolsdaughter.com...also Mizani, and Kera Care all sold at Sephora stores and some at your local Beauty Supply chains....basically just keep your hair moisturized, conditioned, ends clipped, and un-stressed and you should be good...remember EVERYONES hair grows..,.its just that with all the breakage and split ends, you dont notice that your hair is growing....keep the hair on you head NOW healthy and then when (not if, but when) your hair grows you'll notice it

i have long relaxed hair and it comes from keeping the ends trimmed and MOISTURZING. Also reduce your usage of curling irons. Try wrapping and setting your hair under a dryer for a sleek look without stress and breakage. If you want curls do a roller set. But besides styling issues make sure you use some type of moisturizer each day and deep condition your hair biweekly... oh and either relax or color, not both unless professionally done. or you can always go natural

get the ends cut really short every 4 to six weeks and it'll grow faster than ever. Soak it in lemon and other herbs and nurture it.
Dont use too many hair products and avoid straigtening/bleaching/dying/flat ironing/hot curling/crimping it at all costs. Believe me, my hair is really thick and wiry and I did this at the beginning of summer last year when I had shoulder lenght hair and by the start of the school year, my hair reached my lower back

I only trim my layers every 12-14 weeks and tell my stylist to barely touch the ends and it's now almost to my waist.
