I know what a masochist is... but if someone calls you one, does it mean that you're a moron for getting yourself in unnecessary trouble, or are they commending you for being persistant in a situation? Or.. is it a combination of both?
Thanks!

Come on, people, I'm not like a sado-masochist. I don't like physical pain.
Hey, maybe no one called me it... it could just be a random question.

It can swing either way. If you're tackling a tough situtation, for instance you are trying to mediate a problem between two people and it's like brokering a peace treaty for World War 2, then it's a compliment. However, if you're picking a fight just to pick a fight, it's an insult. For example, suppose you are training someone on the job that you don't like, and maybe your coworkers don't like them either. Suppose that the person doesn't get what you're trying to teach them, and you subsequently call them an idiot. That's masochism, because it's inviting another person to throw a few punches at you (mental or physical).
In short, masochism is inviting mental or physical pain onto yourself. Depending on the context of which you are making the invitation, it can be either a compliment or an insult.

Being a masochist is not a good thing. The person is not necessarily insulting you, just pointing out their observation.

I think that same line of bs is used in most religions. It was used as marketing for those who weren't happy with their lives ("Sure, it sucks now, but it'll be GREAT once you die and go to (fill in the blank)"), much the same as it is now. Unhappy people find it easier to blame something/anything else for their unhappiness, and to surrender all responsibility for their own happiness to something/anything. That moral and intellectual laziness seems to be human nature. And that, kids, is how religion was invented.

Do you enjoy pain? Then it is no insult if you are called a masochist.

Yeah and if you knew what the term meant you would know why. They don't just LIKE PAIN, it pleasures them, the difference with S&M is they like to provide pain as well as get it. It is still about getting pleasure either way.

Absolutely it is an insult and absolutely it is your fault. You are known by your actions, thoughts, and fruits you bare. You only have your NAME..I'd think about making some major changes.

I don't know because I don't know the person who said it.
