According to the books I have read on insulin reaction, the taste buds still signal that sweet is coming in, and insulin can react accordingly - letting you gain weight unless you are insulin resistant (type 2). Coffee has caffeine in it, which also produces an insulin reaction. But with coffee, it is more what you put in it than the coffee, unless you drink more than 2-3 cups a day.

A recent study showed that diet soda does facilitate weight gain. Drink water and no caffeine. Caffeine creates a desire for carbohydrates. Exercise every day, even if it's just a walk. Go on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. Eat fish, eggs, chicken, occasional lean beef or pork, low fat cottage cheese. Stay away from regular cheese, no bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, peas, beans (except green beans). No fruit and no fruit juice (it's sugar water, my dr says). Cut down on carrots and tomatoes (included ketchup). Use mustard instead of mayonnaise in recipes. Eat lots of salads, green vegetables. Salads only have one tablespoon of dressing for the whole salad. No ice cream, or other desserts. 8 glasses of water a day.

The caffeine in coffee and some diet sodas is a stimulant. They make you have cravings and you eat more. Use both minimally and you should be fine. Use both in decaf and you won't have to worry.

Diet soda helps but I have found from personal experience it encourages you to eat worse then you normally do in an odd way.

I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't help you there.

Pegasus is right. The sweet taste of diet sodas prepares your body to digest sugars, and when it doesn't actually get those sugars it gets confused and starts to crave them, causing you to munch on junk food even more than you would have originally. Stick to natural foods- water, herbal tea, unsweetened fruit juice, etc. Your body knows how to handle these products.

I was once told by my endrocrinologist that diet soda has an appetite enhancer in it and that is why you are hungry about an hour after drinking it. Coffee, I was told, can increase your hunger also.

Music makes you eat more. According to a survey by the journal Psychology as well as Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage you to definitely take time over your mealtime, so you consume more meal. So, switch off – silence will make you more aware of what you’re setting up your mouth.

Obtain smaller plates. Little crockery means portion control is really a lot easier – those diminutive parts suddenly look huge and you’ll be happier to consume less.
