Do not give your dog any over the counter medicine without talking to your veterinarian first! If you give your dog a wrong dose or if there is another component of the medicine that could cause serious sideeffects to your animal. Many over the counter medicines can be and are toxic to animals, especially if the wrong dose is given! CALL YOUR VET MONDAY MORNING!

This medication is called Loratadine (Claritin-D) and I could only find two articles pertaining to it (regarding administering it to dogs) when doing a search. One is written by a veterinarian and after reading it, I would definitely not feel comfortable giving my dog this medication without veterinary approval and supervision. I have a dog with severe allergies and my vet has never even suggested this medication - I have to believe that there's a reason as she's quite informed. You received some good advice from Autumn (I think that's the name) - Please don't take the answers you receive on a forum like this as legitimate...after all, many people see this as a "game" to gain points and that can be to the detriment of your dog. This forum should NEVER be used as an alternative for veterinary advice.

I don't know if they can take the Claritin or not, but I am sure that they could NOT take the Claritin-D. Claritin-D has a huge amount of pseudoephedrine in it ( the ingredient in Sudafed which took it off the shelves). This would cause severe heart problems for your dog. Check with your vet, but I would think the side effects of the Claritin would be much less than the side effects of Benadryl.

If your dog has allergy problems, it needs to be seen by a vet. This is not the place for medical questions, and I wish people would stop asking them here because many of these other answers are by people who have no idea what they're talking about and are giving bad advice. The only person who can tell what to use for your pet's allergies is a veterinarian. Please call them!

defiantly don't give them claritin. there is pseudophederine in it which is deadly to cats and dogs. tavist is good to give animals. for 70 lb. try a whole tablet if it dosent work go with one and a half up to 2, that's a safe dosage, just remember only give it to the dog when you notice symptoms because they do build up a tolerance to it, then you eventually need to get prescribed meds. from the vet. also good medicated baths can help too.

I agree with autumn.....the best thing to do is see your vet. There are many things out there that can help your pet...but it depends a lot too on what the root problem is. Different things will work better on different types of allergies...depends on severity too. Could also look into food allergies, not just inhalents.

Antihistamines in general are more effective in itchy cats than itchy dogs, though many dogs achieve relief with this medication. I have no clue on how much though. Sorry. Hope I've helped.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
