There are a lot of low fat and low calorie dressings out there. The problem is that most people don't actually monitor their portions. The actual portion size for a serving of salad dressing is 2 tablespoons. Think of all the times you go out to dinner and see people drowning their lettuce in ranch or thousand island. If you only use the serving size as listed on the back of the bottle, then you should be fine adding a little dressing to your salad. However, if you want to avoid it altogether, I can recommend you another option so that you can have the flavor without the fat and calories.
Wishbone has come out with something called Salad Spritzers. So far they come in three different flavors: Italian, Red Wine Mist, and Balsamic Breeze. The spray is made of water, corn syrup, vinegar, oil, and other flavorings. Each spray is only 1 calorie and 0 fat. I have heard these recommended by other people, although I have not tried them yet myself. I saw them in the store today and I think they were only about $3 or so, although of course this will vary by state.
A review I read had this to say: "Of the three, the Balsamic Breeze is the best-tasting. The Italian dressing was a little sweet. All of them are somewhat watery, as you would expect, but impart just enough flavor to your salad without overdoing it. Just remember to shake the bottle before you spray."
If you want to make your own dressing at home, you CAN use olive oil as others have suggested. Olive oil is very good for your heart, but keep in mind that it's very high in fat. Here's another bit of advice for you for homemade dressings: "For vinaigrette dressings, the usual ratio of oil to vinegar is three to one. At the very least, reverse it so you have three parts vinegar to one part oil. Or simply replace some of the oil with water, juice or fat-free broth. Use honey, mustard, garlic, herbs, shallots, ginger or other flavors to add taste and body. If it’s fruitiness you’re after, use a little pureed fruit (raspberries or mango, for instance)."

If I were you, I would be more concerned with all the artificial ingredients in vinegar, rather than the fat content of olive oil. The monounsaturated fat in olive oil is EXTREMELY good for you, so are the antioxidants. If you want to add more taste to the olive oil, mix in some lemon juice and minced garlic, or make your own flavoured oil by adding some fresh herbs to the olive oil (like a sprig of rosemary or a some basil leaves) and refrigerating the mixture (up to a week in an air-tight container).

I've had vinegar and it's really good but don't eat it by itself. If you mix vinegar with some pure extra virgin olive oil with a little bit of lemon juice and some italian seasoning it's really good. It sounds difficult but it's really quite easy to make and you can make as little or as much as you'd like. It's very low in saturated fat and trans fat, which is the bad stuff, plus you don't have to use as much as you would normal salad dressing.

I make a homemade honey-mustard dressing. You know the ingredients, honey, and mustard. There is no fat, but you do have some carbohydrates from the honey. But it is much better than most store bought "honey-mustard" dressings, which usually list the first ingredient which is "soybean oil"
Place it in on the side and dip your lettuce, don't drench, that way, you take only enough to flavor your salad.

Get a bottle of balsamic vinegar and some olive oil. Use some of each just enough to wet your salad. You can mix the two together with garlic powder, too. Delicious.

Yeah you can use vinegar. They have the new salad dressing with no fat in it in stores now. Well it's been here since earlier this year. Some healthy type salad dressing.

Vinegar and oil is yummy! I always like to get some packages of crunchy salad toppings too, I want to enjoy myself! Put some chicken in your salad too if you can. I never really thought about vinegar and oil until I went to Europe and they eat it everywhere over there.

You could try oil and vinegar mixture with some extra virgin olive oil - which is good for you.
Also, it is good to have a little fat with your vegetable because it helps absorb the nutrients in the vegetables.

What's wrong with lo cal, lo carb, lo fat dressing? I use balsamic vinegar it's really tasty and add a little bit of lemon juice and some mixed herbs.
