It has been said that religions cater to peoples' fear of dying by fabricating explanations of the afterlife, the universe, and other unanswerable questions. Are religious people superstitious? And would they admit it if they were?

Absolutely!!, Religion is nothing more than a security blanket for the ignorant, gullible, and sheepish who fear what is to come of the future and of their own mortality.

Your question is too vague for it to have a "definite" answer. But this is mine. For Christians, no. While some do fabricate explanations of the afterlife, Christian belief is based on the truth that "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. That whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life" (Jn 3:16) And hell is, in fact, an afterlife also as you call it, only, it is "death after death". Meaning, you will be living, but without life. For life IS being one with our Creator. Of course, once in a while we may be superstitious, like "knock on wood" or something, but the afterlife superstition you were talking about? As I've already told you, It's not superstition at all.

"religious" covers a vast area. Are you wondering if "Christians" are superstitious?
I'm a Christian, and I'm not superstitious.
In fact, I own a black cat, i walk under ladders all the time, I've dropped more mirrors than I care to count (and broke them...) i've put on clothes inside out (and then realized my boo-boo) so changed them to the right way...i'm not overly particular over entrances/exits...if it's a door and it's handy, I use it...lol...
what else?
I can't think of anything of the top of my head, but NO, I'm not superstitious. I think superstition is nutts.

Given a broad definition of superstitious i would have to say all who are involved in any religion are.
Even many who follow the Christian Faith fall victim to some form of superstition from time. no mortal is perfect. The Christian Faith it's self is not religion. Religion is mans invention. The Christian Faith is one-on-one with God. God/Believer with no man deecreed doctrin or dogma inbetween.
Of course if you are not a Christian then That Faith is, to you, also a superstition.
Mankind has free will to do as he or she damn well pleases... and most of them are.... superstitiously speaking of course

Not all religious people are superstitious, but all superstitious people are religious. Or the other way around, I'm not sure.

I suppose they are. But, is being a little superstitious bad? In a world that always has two sides (ie: life and death, day and night, summer and winter) can there not be two beliefs, religion and science, coexisting together?

Yes, they are.. and No, they won't. Admitting that any part of their fairytale was not completely true would open them up to questioning the rest of it.. and they have been well instructed against that.
