Considering you can't figure out the problem with camera, then likely you also have yet to figure out the following:
1) Your boyfriend is stupid
2) You have just wasted 5 points
3) But you have easily gotten me 2 points (thanks)

Assuming he didn't do it on purpose, sometimes there could be a different between the image you see through the optical viewfinder and the actual aperture opening, especially when you zoom. A SLR camera doesn't have this problem.

Most likely your b/f is a cack-handed sod, and hasn't been using the VIEWFINDER (or LCD screen if it's a digital) to line the shot up properly first before pressing the shutter release button.

He probably has the guillotine feature on. Try turning the nob to normal.
