The American Pit Bull Terrier. I raised them for eight years, and never had one bite me. Only one was ever aggressive to strangers, and I did the responsible thing, and had her put down. If she had ever gotten loose, she would have hurt someone. All of the rest were calm, loveable, affectionate, intelligent, loyal, and eager to please.
They don't get very big. Mine averaged about 45 pounds. My smallest was 30 lbs. My largest was 65 lbs. But I have no doubt that even my smallest APBT would have been able to stop anyone who threatened me. Most of mine were fine watch dogs. They might let you in the house when I wasn't home, if they knew you well, but I don't know if they would have actually bitten anyone that tried to break in. They were that friendly. But if they wouldn't have bitten an intruder, they at least bluffed well enough that nobody ever tried.
They have short fur, so they don't shed a lot. They won't give someone who has allergies as many problems as most other breeds. They don't drool. They are resistant to disease, and almost completely free of genetic defects. None of mine ever suffered from any kind of genetic diseases, such as hip dysplasia. They are much less likely to bite out of fear or pain. Mine were raised around kids of all ages. They would tolerate any kind of ear pulling or tail twisting from young children. They would play frisbee all day long. I've had several that could swim under water and climb trees like a cat.
I could wrestle around on the ground with friends in front of any of my dogs and they would ignore the activity. But if my friend were to get angry and raise his voice, they would have been right there to back me up. I had one that was painfully shy of people, but he came unglued when he thought some guy was threatening my wife.
I'm not trying to talk anybody into getting an APBT. I just love talking about them. They are the only dog I'll ever have. But they aren't for everybody, since they tend to be very quarrelsome with other dogs. Socializing them properly, and maintaining that sociability is not an easy task.

Australian Shepherds (aussies)!! :)
They are loving, protective, loyal, INTELLIGENT, fun-loving, hard-working, and completely trusting (once you've earned it, that is.) They are good with children, even though they try to herd a bit. They are reserved with strangers, with I think is a GOOD thing. They aren't necessarily the 'cutest' dogs around, but I think they are adorable. They aren't "cookie cutter" pups. No two look alike, even if they are from the same litter. One could have blue eyes, one could have brown eyes, one could have one of each!
I'm getting long winded again. Sorry.

mine is the Chow Chow. this isn't a canines for actually everyone and certiantly no longer for novices, yet i absolutley adore Chows. why i love them, their personalities. they get connected to at least one human being and are dependable to that perosn previous speaking, i love the project they deliver about to preparation and their one of my fav breeds to groom; no longer to coach how fully wonderful they are as puppy's. theres also the protection element of the breed, maximum actually everyone appears frightened of them and for reliable reason; their more cost-effective and better appropriate than an alarm because their a silent watch canines. they hardly ever bark, which ability if someone is stupid sufficient to break int oa domicile that owns a Chow, probable the intruder gained't understand it until eventually the canines is biting them. actual, those canines are better cat than canines. i bypass over my Max, he died a 12 months in the past and replaced into the most appropriate canines i ever had transforming into up. replaced into the canines i realized to groom on and the first bully breed i ever experienced.
