James,
Your travels in Masonry have already begun. In your heart you know that you want to be a Freemason. Because the fraternity does not evangelize in any way we never ask anyone to become a Mason. Every member has joined of his own freewill and has not been persuaded to become a member. Your own Grandfather followed this rule and never asked you to join his lodge.
Search out the most respected members of your community and you will find that they are probably Freemasons. Tell your desire to one of these men and he will secure for you a petition to the lodge. A committee of inquiry will call on you at your home to make sure that your desires are true, that you are a respected member of the community and worthy to become a Mason. If the committee approves of you; the entire lodge will be notified and you must pass a unanimous ballot. If any member of the lodge feels that you are unworthy; you will never become a member of the lodge as long as the objection exists.
As a member you will be part of the world's oldest and greatest fraternity. You will find charitable needs and causes, education, fellowship, and friendship. One of the greatest gifts a man can give to another is to help him become a Mason. I hope that I am responding in such a way that I can give this gift to you.

I am a wife of a Free Mason. My husband is a good man. If the Freemason were anything else he wouldn't be part of the fraternity. The things they do are for their eyes only just like any other organization that you have to join in order to participate in. If something was to happen to my husband and he was unabel to work or be hospitalized the Masons would take care of our family. You can go anywhere in the world and you will find a Mason and they will have your back. That is just the way they are. I believe it is good to have them on your side. If you don't like the lodge that you will be joining, you can still be a mason thru the Grand Lodge. You do have to be sponsered but, shouldn't be a problem since your Grandfather was a mason. Usually, a couple of the Masons will come out and interview you and see what kind of "person" you are then they will take the petition back to the lodge and they will vote on it. Once you are voted in then you can get started learning the material and it is word of mouth. One of the Masons' has to teach you. Then if you like it and your wife wants to join in the she can join in with the Eastern Star. HOpe this helps you out some. Good luck!

James, pay attention to your heart and your family's history.
I am a Freemason of a slightly different Order (American Co-Masonry). We admit women and men of all races who believe in a Supreme Being. Just thought I would say hi and let you know we exist too. Not trying to recruit or the like.
Last minute advice?
1. There are those who do not know and thrive on hatred. Those are NOT Freemasons. Freemasons do lots of good in this world. And if there were something wrong or rotten, I guarantee that the women in our Order or the wives in the "masculine Orders" would not put up with it. Be assured of that.
2. Pay attention and study hard. That means go beyond just learning by rote what you need to get to third degree. It means start asking yourself how you can apply the lessons of each working tool to your own life.
3. Try to do something Masonic every day. This only works if you do. It is about improving yourself, you know.
4. Know that no harm can come to those who place their faith in God.
I am glad you are joining, no matter which Order you choose. American Co-Masonry may be something you later wish to explore. The link is below. (Most Brothers of yours will not know about it or think that women do not belong in Masonry). Feel free to write me if you wish.

I sort of heard that they are good, but at the same time they will ask you, and that no matter how much you try, it is up to them to ask you to join. If your not concerned with what there concerned about, like if your just trying to follow up on your grandfather's legacy, well like they are about something, and if you are not interested in that naturally, well good luck getting in.... as it is not going to work out for you. They from what I hear have their source of ancient text, found by masons, which was buried in a stone wall, a long long time ago, well before the time of Christ... but of similar origin. I have never seen their books, but have had friends who have been allowed to read some of their texts, or at least have claimed to have.

here's what you need to know about freemasonry. I'll try to help you as much as i can.
first of all! to become a Freemason you have to be brought in by a Freemason. you cant just join.
lets pretend that you were recruited or brought in or recommended which ever you wanna call it.
you will be blind folded and brought into the lodge to meet the grand master of the lodge and after they approve you they begin the initiation ceremony and you will swear under oath to keep their secrets or suffer death. you are supposed to be coming from the world of darkness to the world of light.
the first 3 degrees in freemasonry is not much of a secret.
they are mostly normal every day people who go to work and members of churches who join the masonic lodges thinking that its a christian organization that helps people..!!
well,
IT IS NOT A CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION. matter of fact it really has nothing to do with Christianity and if you look deeper in their teachings you will find a Lotta contradiction with the bible.
on the other hand they do charity work and do help people.
the highest and most powerful positions of freemasonry are the 32nd and 33rd degrees. only a few dozen men in the entire world reach those degrees.
as you move up in the ranks initiation ceremonies also change and become more of satanic ritual ceremonies.
have in mind that the 1st 2nd and 3rd degrees also called the blue degrees are not like that and most people don't go further than those 3 degrees.
now lets talk about the highest most powerful Freemason degree the 33rd degree!!!
it's the belief in Lucifer as god.(Lucifer is confirmed to be the devil himself). the god of light/ the morning star as they call him.
they do satanic rituals/ witch craft and even human sacrifices.. it's true!!!
they have a lot of knowledge they use symbols to gather power.
a Lotta things you need to know before taking such step. its not about following your grand father's foot steps although i admire that.
please do a research before you join.
good luck.

My husband is a mason (not that I know anything about being one) and he says that you have to ask to join. No one can ask you to join because it goes against their teachings. But I believe it's a good umm... organization (I don't really know what to call it). My husband has told me that there are certain signs and gestures you can put out there (as a mason) and you'd be surprised at how many masons will come out of the woodwork to help you if they can. I say go for it!

I am a Freemason and you will be fine it is a great organization. We are not a secret society we are a society with a secret. Our goals are to help distressed brothers their widows and orphans. We also try to make all men's life better. The works of a master mason mostly go unnoticed because we do not do our good deeds for the glory from man but for the glory of all mankind.
Good luck in your travels my good man.

The ultimate question is, why do you want to join the masons? Are you unable to find christian fellowship in a local church? Are you unable to find opportunities for outreach and service to others? Do you need a fellowship like the masons to achieve your goals?
Do you have selfish motives for wanting to join the masons? If so, then perhaps you shouldn't.

I am a three time Past Master of my Masonic Lodge.
My only advice is listen and pay close attention to what is said to you and to what you observe.
It is a fraternal organization that takes good men and teaches them to become better men.
I hope that you follow through with your idea.
