I will be spending a few nights in the area and I don't want to rent a car because we're drinking, they're expensive and we don't know the area. I don't think the buses or will run as late as we plan to be out. And taxi's look like they are going to be really expensive. Are there any other options for late night travel from downtown LA or Hollywood etc?

My hotel is in El Segundo that's where I'm looking to head home to after the night is over. Is El Segundo a bad area?

From El Segundo not really. Your best bet would be to hook up with some local that you know real well and wants to party with you.

However, you may be able to get an awesome out of towner discount rate from the local limo services, especially on the week nights when the prices are substantially cheaper. I had a friend that did this once. She was lucky and got surprised by the cheap rate. You might be surprised, so try it out and ask around! They might even charge you per day instead of per hour. Get your friends to chip in too.

El Segundo? Why there? Especially for clubs!?

If you're staying in the downtown LA area, there's quite a few clubs there. However your best bet is Hollywood area. The metro runs down from the downtown to the Hollywood area (red line, I believe). Or, if you are staying near the Staples Center, there's the Blue line which runs parallel to the 110 freeway, and takes you to Long Beach. LB has a lot of clubs and restaurants too.

I agree with the other people. Rent a car and have a designated driver, or rent a driver. You need a car to get around the LA area
