I would recommend the Vietnam Wall. Very powerful. I don't know anyone who died in that war but just watching the people who come to this monument to make impressions of people's names is very memorable. Also, the American history museum is wonderful and also has an exhibit of things left at the Vietnam Memorial. The Park RAngers didn't know what to do with all the letters and tokens which were left there and so the American history Museum decided to make them into a display. There's everything from packs of Marlboro, to empty Budweiser cans, to wedding rings, letters written by nurses who were in Vietnam and wished they could have saved more people, etc. In DC you can take a shuttle bus for the day for a very cheap price and get on and off just about anywhere you want. Enjoy. It's a wonderful city. you should also make sure you have someone drive you around after dark. All the monuments are lit up and it's a beautiful sight. Bon voyage!

aside from all the monuments that cant be missed - i'd recommend the holocaust museum. i spent hours there on my last trip, and it was worth every second.
of course theres the smithsonian museums as well... honestly - you could spend 2 weeks there and still not see everything. so really it would depend on what you're going there for, what your interests are and how long you want to spend sighseeing. :)
