If you wan to relax and meditate, than Thailand will be a good option. However, you are not going to get much temples there in Phuket. It might be better to head to another destination.
For your Phuket stay, there are quite a few top noych hotel *** spa avilable. So you can get a holiday package with spa treatment too. Checkout Amanpuri Resort, Baan Krating Jungle Beach, Galleria aleenta, Le Meridien Phuket, Marina Phuket, Mom Tri's Villa, The Chedi, The Village Resort, Twinpalms Phuket, Diamond Cliff Resort & Spa, Holiday Inn Phuket, Sheraton Grand Laguna Beach Resort. You can check them on www.asiarooms.com
From Phuket, may I recommend a break in Hua Hin beach resort area? There you are off the tourist route and you get more privacy than in Phuket. Plus you can head to Petchaburi town nearby to check out some early temples. You should be able to have a reaxing time there too.
Have a good time in Thailand.

if you're there for a long relaxing holiday then it's worth the trip but if you're there for just a short get-away, stick to the dominican republic. the jet-lag would spoil your short holiday, then the amount of time wouldn't let you enjoy the beautiful island. But if you'll be staying more than a week then i say go for it since the dominican rep is closer to u and you can go there another time once you've saved up.
you might want to get a resort with nice pool facilities if you don't want tio be bothered at the beach when u're trying to get a tan. other than that, look for any hotel with the facilities you want as the service there most likely will make you're stay an enjoyable one already. I stayed at the Thara Patong Beach Resort but I didn't really spend much time in the hotel itself anyway.
Hope this helps

Well, it does depend on knowing more abt how much time you have and what you are looking for in a vacation. I just returned from a one week trip to the USA.. it was 30 hrs in transit ea way due to a long layover.. so, I would say not less that two weeks.. Hey, I love the Aussie above - goes to all the tourist spots and complains that it is too touristy!! - like not wanting sand and ocean at the beach.. There are lovely secluded beaches as well. I live in Central Thailand and it is genuine here.. interesting things to do too.. The culture and people are unique.. many small resorts too - but if you are looking for just a totally relaxing beach hotel resort thing, you might do just as well in Dominican Republic - if you want to throw exotic and unique into the mix - it is special here.. feel free to contact me if you want more specific advice..

We just got back Phuket 2 weeks ago. We stayed in 3 different places, K Hotel in Patong Beach, Baan Karonburi at Karon Beach and Baan Krating at the southern tip of the island. If you love the crowd and action, patong beach is the best. Karon Beach is good if you want some peace. There are many resorts there that faces the sea.
We love Baan Krating. It is also known as 'Jungle Beach Hotel', and aptly so. It has its own private beach, and is known for its rustic charm.
Check out this website www.asiarooms.com They have the best accomodation rates I've seen. Best of all, you can read about other peoples comments and recommendations.
One word of warning. Food and accomodation is cheap in Phuket but the transport (taxi and tuk-tuk) is the most expensive in Thailand, and expensive by South-east Asian standard.

We went to Thailand in Feb2006,i was disappointed but learnt a lot.
we found it very polluted, very touristy, like a theme park maybe because we went to the tourist spots,Chang Mai,Phuket,Phi Phi
Island, we are spoilt in Australia with pristine beaches and environment so i am defiantly more environmentally aware since the trip.Thai people are friendly but everything is about money and bargaining(understandable because of the poverty) and the sex trade is in evidence everywhere. We spent a week in Laos which was the best part of the trip ,like being in a discovery channel documentary very friendly people, tourism just developing, great food fresh from the gardens, unspoilt environment still has unexploded bombs being cleared though.depends if you want and adventure holiday or to sit at a resort and party.Best parts-elphant riding, temples, hilltribes(long neck Karen in Chang Mai) raised awarness of enviromental issues and the problems poverty causes.ie sex trade.

Depends what you are looking for - Koh Samui, Krabi and Hua Hin are much nicer but quieter - Bangkok is a bustling city - all Thai people are charming - the food is great, but I would recommend visiting the Philippines instead - good prices, equally as charming people as the Thais - check out Boracay on the internet.

Thailand is the 'perfect' destination for an oriental vacation. I've been to most of Asia but the "Land of Smiles" holds topspot everytime.

The best place in Asia, and will open your eyes to a lot of things for sure. Some good and some bad.
Just stick to the good things and it'll be the best thing you ever did.
