The Fed. Govt is not allowed to have ANY form of registration for guns and gun owners, thank goodness and thank the NRA. However, F*cked up states like CA and NY do require registration IF you are EVEN allowed to purchase a firearm.
You did not specify what state you are in, so it is difficult to answer your question of whether or not you can purchase a firearm in another state and keep it in another, you need to edit your question and be specific.
I do, however, understand your plight. I'm from CA and when I returned from my enlistment, I was infuriated I could not purchase a firearm with out waiting for weeks for a 'cool down' period and paying outrageous fees. So I got a job where I was allowed to carry a gun and used that everywhere I went. But it's hard to go around irrational laws this way so not everyone can do this. I also understand the concern of having to register your guns with ANYONE. People like some of the other answerer's immediately think you are up to no good when you wanna PURCHASE a firearm but forget that personal protection is not guaranteed by the police, only yourself.
You can purchase a firearm in a surrounding state like Arizona and even 'open' carry it without a permit in THAT state, but you have to list a residential address in that state and you cannot transport the firearm back to CA, where I THINK you are from, without listing it in that state,(CA). I can be of more help if you are more specific in your state.

I can tell you for a fact that Florida doesn't require resistration of handguns and the only permit required is if you want to carry concealed and Vermont is very similar, whereas when I lived in NY you had to have a permit just to simply own a handgun. The best place to check would be your local police department or a reputable gun store, most gun stores will be more than willing to ether guide you through the laws and permit process of your state or guide you to somebody who can. ******************* Federal Registration is NOT a requirement, and I can attest to this as a Police Officer and a gun owner************ , as the person posted below, state law cannot override federal , but they can augment it and make higher levels of restrictions, just as states like NY and CA do

I'm not sure what states don't require you to register a handgun, but I believe I have a way you can find out, go to google.com & do a google search on"gun registeration laws".
Now about your second question. I think you are allowed to buy a handgun from one state and use it in another state. I'm not completely sure on that, I would with local state and federal laws before do buy the handgun in one state and use it in a another.

My thought is the real question here is whether or not an individual can purchase an assault weapon or some other weapon. As far as transporting across State lines, unloaded and out of view will suffice. Its your personal property. I love to shoot, and have never bought a used weapon or one from a gun show seller.
I buy only handguns and rifles from the Manufacturer and have them shipped to my Dealer. One way or another, if you are a Citizen with no strange and dangerous agenda, don't worry about the paper trail.

Federal Law requires you to fill out a form if you buy a firearm from a licensed dealer in any state. If you buy from a private collector no paperwork is necessary. There's more to it - I think you have to prove residence in the state of purchase or use a dealer to ship to another licensed dealer in your home state.

The registration question is irrelevant. Federal law mandates that you can only purchase a handgun in your state of residence, unless you are active military. Violation of this law is a felony.

You have to have a backgroung check done by the FBI every time you buy a handgun. I have a concealed weapon license and if I am in my home state the ccw permit takes the place of the "instant" check. The "instant" check is a pain in the ***!!! The only place you are going to buy without one or the other is in an alley from some guy in a ski mask.

I thought all states required registerion and I don't think it's legal to carry firearms from one state to another, I might be wrong. I don't own any guns.

If I were to go to Cabella's in East Grand Forks, MN I would have to have it shipped to an FFL in my home state, which they would run you through NCIC
