Chocolate is toxic and highly alkaline. In large enough quantities it CAN kill a human (though i don't know if any human could ingest the amount needed to do it). When a dog consumes chocolate in an animal as large as a lab weighing 65-75 pounds as little as 8 oz is enough to kill. Activated charcoal is typically given as treatment in addition to iv medication. Here's Why:

"Why is Chocolate Lethal?
Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs. "

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs--eating too much it will make them very ill or kill them. If they eat small amounts as treats and enjoy it, they are more likely to eat a poisonous amount if presented with an opportunity. I was at the emergency vet once when someone brought in their rhodesian ridgeback who was trembling and couldn't walk straight after finding a chocolate brownie on the sidewalk while out for a walk. It was not good.

They have a natural allergy to it. Dark chocolate can and has killed dogs.
I had a rotty that ate a whole bag of Hersheys kisses and was in the hospital for a week he got so sick. Of coarse he ate aluminum foil and all but the vet said he was lucky to be alive from that much choc.

They have chemicals that are fatal to the dogs. Which is why they invented kibble and dog treat as a subsitute treat. It's black and creamy like chocolate well to them it is!

It is poisonous to them, in VERY small quantities.
The particular poisonous component in chocolate is THEOBROMINE, which is also in tea.

They get hyper, not unlike a human taking cocaine.

Signs of toxicity are:
* Excitement / nervousness / trembling
* Vomiting / diarrhea
* Excessive thirst / sometimes excessive urination (at higher levels of Theobromine toxicity)
* Muscle spasms
* Seizures
* Coma (rare
* Death (rare) -- likely due to heart rhythm abnormalities.
