if you're looking at street fighting, its a whole different story. martial arts are good only to a certain extent. there are too many regulations when u spar to transfer over to real life fights. i took martial arts for many years of my life and i seriously think that it would hinder me from a real street fight. ive learned to control myself and not fight dirty. for a street fight type thing, i would recommend boxing, kickboxing, or freeform fighting styles that u see being used by the guys in ultimate fighter or pride fighting. and seriously, nowadays, its not like u can do too much against a gun...

MasterK, you're retarded. If martial artists "destroyed" wrestlers and boxers, Rampage, Dan Henderson, Matt Hughes, Couture........ and so on and so on would lose constantly. It comes down to the people using the technique, who controls the fight and sometimes luck. It's not really the technique that wins a fight, but the better fighter. With that said though, the best technique for self defense is Krav Maga since it exists solely for self defense and is used to protect soldiers in hand to hand combat situations and against guns. Sambo's pretty good for that too. Just make sure you get a qualified and talented instructor. No technique taught by someone who's not good at teaching it is useful. And by the way, boxing is useful, but you should learn another martial art too if you want good self defense.

There are many systems which are complete systems. This is to say that if a system incorporates long range weapons (guns, arrows), mid-range weapons (staffs, spears), short range weapons (swords, knives), hand/foot strikes, close fighting (knees, elbows), grappling, and ground-fighting, then it would be complete. There are several systems like this, and I can think of a few Chinese martial arts off the top of my head.
Bear in mind that martial arts in their purest forms are meant for street fighting and defending oneself despite what others may tell you regarding sparring. Be weary of schools that focus more on sparring techniques over self defense.
Also, be weary of people throwing around statistics that have no basis such as "90% of fights end up on the ground". Does this mean in UFC, police take-downs, or actual fights? Actual fights would be pretty tough to gauge.
Another aspect to be weary of would be a mixed martial artist who takes "the best" of this, and "the best" of that, because unless he/she has mastered said style, he/she wouldn't know what is best. Besides, if you have a complete system, you would already be a well-rounded fighter.

If you want to learn all of those in one class, Karate is a good way to go. Otherwise:
Standup: Boxing/Kickboxing
Clinch: Muay Thai
Ground: Jiu Jitsu
Weapons: Kali
Street Fighting: Krav Maga

Jehovah's people do not get involved in martial (meaning military or war-like) activities. See Isaiah 2:2-4; Micah 4:1-4; and John 17:16.

Enshin Ryu Battojutsu: The Sword Arts of the Samurai

Oh, by the way, for anyone who saw the comment about Jehovah and military combat, get a Bible and read the book of Joshua, where you will see God's chosen people fighting the Canaanites.

Don't believe everything you hear. Study and find out for yourself!

theres the philopino knife fighting that is good, but your best bet is this, learn all m.m.a.,meaning mostly ju-jit-su/judo,muy tai, judo, wrestleing, shoot fighting, and then top it off with some good kung fu...many styles to choose from but find the one that suits your weopons area...i think wing chun has alot of that but not 100% sure...i have only studied weopons defense in judo and my katas has done very well for that...katas in most peoples eyes are useless, but it is extemely important...i could go into detail but id be here forever. just do the mma thing and look into kung fu
