Oh, absolutely get Firefox 1.5. It comes with a totally kick–*** download manager. Your downloads download in the background, and you can open the Downloads window and see their progress.
Afterwards, you can use it to open the files or (by right mouse clicking for a popup menu) see what folder they are in on your desktop.
The software is free, open source, and works on all the popular computer operating systems - Mac OS X, Linux, and MS-Windows. They are planning on making it work with MS Vista too, when that comes out in a year or so.
Firefox supports more W3 web standards than any other popular browser, and has the most powerful Javascript and Java languages too. it does really fancy things with graphics too.
MS-IE is good for running Windows Update. It will still work after your install Firefox. Firefox does not take over your whole machine or modify your operating system. You do not even have to make it your default web browser, if you do not want it to be.
If you have a Macintosh, it came with Safari. Safari also has a very good download manager.
Web browsers written in the past several years include a primo download manager as a standard feature. Apparently 4 or 5 years ago, when some of them were written, a download manager was considered a "deluxe item". No more, though.
By the way, though it is super powerful and really smart/capable, Firefox is not very big. And every time it needs to update itself, it can tell you (user settable preference setting) or just do it.
When Firefox downloads an update for itself, it only downloads what part of itself has to change - not the whole entire program. That makes for very quick updates. You don't have to wait 10 minutes for it to finish.
If you like Firefox, try Thunderbird. You can get it from the Mozilla site, same as Firefox. It was written by the same group and uses the same core logic as Firefox has in order to render its HTML emails that you receive/write.
Version 2.0 of Firefox will also likely be out by the end of 2006. It is expected that it will add some cool power user features like Microsummaries.
The Firefox thing definitely has it going on.
