As a point, it was so long ago that some of the reason may be lost, misinterpreted or otherwise, but apparently for the reason all the others have said.

...Minus the actually being true, yadayada parts. People get too touchy when anything bad can be related to their religion.

Jesus was crucified for trying to teach the real eternal religion and trying to stop people from committing unnecessary animal sacrifices and making up their own rules.

The Jews were the first to try and twist real religious principles to fit their own needs and they are still a big influence in the world today. The Jews despite pretending to be God's people used the influence of the Romans (the most power government of the time) to crucify Jesus for trying to re-establish God's true religion.

The Romans after observing that Christianity could not be stopped decided to adopt it and twist it further for their own purposes. The so-called Christians of today are still following the twisted ideas of the early Romans.

Mahatma Gandhi was once asked if he would convert to Christianity to which he replied he would if were to meet a true Christian.

Jesus was a great soul / teacher, however, his teachings have more or less been obscured.

For blasphemy- which is speech against God. Judas Iscariot betrayed him by going to the powerful Jew's living in the city at the time (Judas was a disciple- meaning a follower and believer of Christ like Christians) and the Romans were in charge of the place were all the Jews were living so they took him to Pointus Pilate (like a king) and he had to crucify him because so many Jews wanted him to be punished. Many Romans didn't see what he has done wrong just like i didn't because he was betrayed.

If you see the link below its the movie that was made 2004 based on your question.

at320 has the correct answer. The rest of the "answers" about blaspheming, etc. were the reasons the Jewish priestly class turned Jesus over to the Romans.

Pilate had an inscription put over Jesus' head on the cross in three languages that stated his "crime." It read, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."

He was arrested for saying he was the son of God and refusing to bow to the Emperor, Caesar(?). The Jews at the time were under roman rule and Jerusalem (Ierosolymam in Latin I think) itself had been attacked and defeated, as depicted on the Arch of Trajan in Rome. The Pharisees and Roman authorities believed he was a dangerous rebel who would undermine the strictly controlled Jews and the Roman state religion and so looked for an excuse to execute him and so rid themselves of him. This attitude may deem hypocritical when compared to the Roman tolerance of Isis worship and cults such as Mithras. Typically Christianity in the Roman empire attracted the captured provinces in the East which then spread to Rome itself in time. At the time of the first Christians in Rome, catacombs and secret xhurches already existed on Malta, in Egypt and Israel itself, and sites in Italy. These secret churches were lavishly decorated often and served as churches, graveyards and sometimes shelter from soldiers and other persecutors. Bigger ones were several miles long,

He was seditiously accused of blasphemy but ultimately He was arrested and tried by the Sanhedrin for stirring up desention. His "crime" didn't exist..He was crucified as a sacrificial sin offering for all of humanity. He is the Lamb of God. Love in Christ, ~J~ <><

Jesus was accused but the accusations where all made up read the accounts in the bible. But the real crime wasn't anything Jesus did it was what YOU did. I say you because Jesus died for your sin. He suffered under the hands of the Romans for you, because he loves you. He knew that you could not, would not (ever) be good enough for God. Because of this he knew that you could never go to heaven when you die, and that means you would only go to hell. So Jesus died instead of you because he loves you and wants to protect you. I say you because I mean literally you. Jesus died for all mankind that means he died for me and you as individuals. Our response is to confess our sins and ask Jesus to come into our life's. What are you going to do about it?
Everything I've told you is straight from the bible read it for yourself.

He was teaching ideas that were concider eligal at that time in Jewsish community. INteresting that if he would go against community this time he won't be only crucified it would be much worst. SO Cristians are lucky it was 2000 year ago. Otherwise resurected after you got burn would take some more convincing.
Therefore GOd exists.
Peace

The pharisees accused him of blasphemy because he said he was God.

Matthew 27:37
And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

However, he was really the King of the Jews. He was the son of God. He came down willingly as the perfect sacrifice knowing he would be rejected, and gave up his life as an offering for our sins. By taking the sins of the world upon himself we can now receive forgiveness for our sins and live for eternity in the presence of God.
