Two possibilities. 1: he is insecure and cannot believe that, as popular as you are, he can ever keep up with or deserve to be with someone as popular as you. This is bad news in terms of long term stability, there's a good chance that this lack of confidence will turn to bitterness towards you. 2: It's possible he just felt left out. We all want to be the center of someone's world, and if you are the center of his it may be that he feels that he is not the center of yours, and the 'prom queen' thing made him aware of that. This is still a problem, but not a dangerous one. As long as you are honest with him, confide in him and trust him, he will have the proof that he needs to be confident that you value him as much as he values you.

at your age that is sad and sensitive. probably something was said to him either by you or about you that didn't sit well. ask him and if he doesn't know or answer then just move on. he'll be the loser in the long run.
don't be too down, you will have quite a few more bf's before you're done and maybe they will be better suited to your needs.
be patient, you are still young.
smile, listen to upbeat music, hang with your girlfriends, go away on vacation with your family or a friends family. maybe going away for a few weeks will bring him back. but hey if he's not the guy that isn't the end of the line...you probably were too intimidating for him anyway:)
