I think people like to believe about other churches what fits in with their philosophy. To do otherwise is too challenging to their own lifestyle and world view.
So if their pastor tells them that the other church is a cult which believes in salvation by works, for example, they prefer to believe that, even when faced with evidence that the other church is a spirit-filled, loving and truly Christian restoration of Jesus Christ's church which believes in salvation by grace.
Because if they allowed themselves to investigate and discover the truth, they might find out that their pastor was wrong. Any then they would have to call him a liar and admit that their church is wrong, and that is just too terrible for them to contemplate.
When I found out that my church (Evangelical and Anglican) had happily perpetuated lies about another, I was a little irritated but at the time I believed it was justified. I set about to find out the truth about that church, aiming to use that, instead of the lies, to put people off getting involved with the "cult".
I fought against it for many years, but eventually I did indeed go against the wishes of my entire family and most of my friends and join the true chruch. And now it annoys me tremendously to hear those same lies perpetuated. But I know that the many people who do it probably think a) what they're saying is true and b) saying it is a necessary evil.
Sigh.

Well, I don't go to church, but if I did and they did that, I would be very bothered by it, and (even in front of everybody) tell him if he was wrong and if I was sure. If we had a computer with internet somewhere nearby, I would make him get on Wikipedia and show everybody if it was right or wrong.

They want their religion to sound better, or they are ignorant of the other religion's practices and yet still feel that they have a right to comment on them. (Wicca has often been a victim of this.)

because a belief is not a tangible thing and can only be interpreted. beleifs are not facts and are often just an idea, ideas are not the same from person to person.

I don't have to worry about that. I put my faith in the Word of God-NOT in a religion or Denomination or a person!

I would immediately leave that church and find a more tolerant group.
