YES!!!! Just before closing your bag, lay a nice big sheet of paper block printed with contact information for both locations!!!

This saved my rear last month! One of my bags was smashed, lost its handle and airline tags. Luckily because I had that sheet inside, all I had to do was show them my I.D. to get my bag.

As for Sandra M thoughts, I must disagree. You are required to put name tags on the outside, so someone stealing it makes no difference. Also the odds are very low that if someone stole your bag, they would come to your home.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS!!! Ive worked the dungeon called baggage service many times. There are instances where outer ID tags and Destination tags can be ripped off in transit by getting caught in the conveyors. If a bag arrives with no ID, we have no choice but to go inside the bag to find something that may identify the person who it belongs to. Most people do not realize how important this is. Print a copy of your itinerary and write all contact information on it. Put your home address and home phone and cell number as well as your destination addresses and phone numbers and Hotels you will be staying at or any other people we can contact should it be necessary.

Christmas of 04 was the WORST baggage experience Ive ever seen. Many people never saw their bags because there was such an over abundance in lost baggage. When everyone is missing a black 22" roller bag it's hard to identify with out any information. Many times the outer IDs were old or unreadable. We would stay night and day trying to find something inside that would identify the person.

No matter what you hear, yes the bags are searched if we have to locate the owner. Please Please Please put all contact information inside your bag. You may want to put it in the main compartment under the top layer just incase your bag gets wet in transit, the ink wont run. You can also include a secondary contact should you not be able to be reached. Also lock your bags with TSA approved locks.

Enjoy your trip and Im sure you will be just fine. A word of advise to help prevent baggage from misconnecting Internationally....if you are connecting or changing airlines and you have a long lay over, short check your baggage to the transfer point. For example, if you are flying from Atlanta to JFK on Delta, then transfering to Lufthansa, short check your baggage JFK (or whatever connection city you change at) if you have time to collect it at baggage claim and then recheck it with Lufthansa. Airline to Airline transfers is where bags usually get left behind. It doesnt always happen, but it can and does. If your connection is more than 6 hours you will have to claim and recheck your bags anyway. Just some advise...

Put in an address where you'd want the bag delivered to in the next day or two when it's found.

You can put a whole list of addresses and phone numbers inside with instructions to find you wherever you are.

Put your name, address, and contact info, both European and American. Include your itinerary so they'll know when you're going to be there.

Hint: On your outside luggage tag, put both addresses and your itinerary. You can get special tags, called "retriever tags", that will hold a lot of info here: http://www.magellans.com/store/Luggage___Luggage_Tags___IdentifiersLA311?Args=

The person who said they don't search your bag is wrong.

Put your home address as well as the European contact info of where you'll be staying. If you're traveling a number of places, put your itinerary in the suitcase as well.

Another tip I picked up along the way is to keep a checklist of what is packed in your suitcase. Keep one copy in your checked luggage and one with you.

Put your hotel address, but I would caution against putting your American address in your suitcase -- in case it gets stolen.. You never know who might want to follow it up with a visit. A visit by the wrong person could be dangerous. Contact your embassy and let them know where and how long you are visiting and a contact person in America.

Put your entire itinerary in a manila envelope & mark it "please open in case of lost luggage" on both sides & put the entire thing in a ziplock bag. Put this on top of your clothing so it's the first thing seen when the suitcase is opened. Also a cell phone number if you are carrying one that can be used internationally or a disposable e-mail address - you can probably check your e-mail at an internet cafe, etc..

You should put the address to whatever destination you are heading. And yes it is a good idea to put your info inside also incase your outside tag falls off.
