As someone who's just at the end of being a teenager (19) i'm actually polite to most teachers and adults in general. Though since i'm quiet to those who I don't know, some take that as rudeness...

Anyway though, generally the ones i'm rude and disrespectful to in general, are the ones with an "I'm better than you" and "I master, you follower" attitude.

Though I think a lot of teenagers just don't like authority in general and being told what to do.

I hadn't noticed. I'm a teacher in Wales, and I thought the kids were overly polite, compared to the ones I taught in the States. It's a hormone thing, and also, they occupy a niche that is fairly recent. In my mothers day there were no teenagers as such - you were a child, you became an adult, and the only difference, at least to poor folk, was that when you were an adult, you could marry and have your own kids. I'm afraid us Baby Boomers may be at the bottom of any rudeness - because we created the notion of "teenager". Now rudeness is admired in various celebritiies. But these celebrities are not all teenagers!

Generally, they are not. It just seems that way because, as usual, you usually notice the "bad" ones. I was surprised that other people were surprised that my 6 year old is polite! But still, I think most kids are ok, it's just the minority who make the most noise and give them a bad name. I do know a lot of disrespectful teens and I can honestly say that in most cases, it is because they have not had a good example from their parents and/or being disrespectful might be the only way they have ever been able to get attention. I know I've never really got anywhere by being nice.

Iam 16 and I am very polite to my teachers and other adults, I find that most teachers use their authority to be plain rude to their pupils knowing full well that the pupils will not be rude back out of fear of being told off. And where I live, the elderly are just as bad as some people in my age group- they do not thank you for holding doors for them, instead they look at you all snobby as if to say "and so you should young lady". I think some older people and teachers really do use their age/authority in the wrong way.

It's not just in England! I'm a teacher in the U.S., and some are very rude and disrespectful here at times, too. I'd say it has to do with how a person is raised and how they are treated to start with--from there, it's as individual as the person.

Are you from England? I'm just wondering because I think that kids in the U S A are pretty rude and disrespectful! At least most of the ones I know are and a lot that I see out at malls and restaurants are too. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that parents now a days let them do whatever they want and say whatever they want. That's my opinion.

First off - it is a minority of teens who are like that - not all or even most of them.

SEcondly - the ones who arent do feel let down that the adults seem unable or unwilling to bring consequences to bear onto those who are wrongdoers (like the current phase of riding offroad motor bikes on pavements and ally ways at top speeds)

what needs to change is the issue of accountability - wrong doers facing the consequneces of their wrongdoing swiftly rather than constant streams of excuses made for any and every misbehaviour. Of course there are those who do have genuine problems (and not all of them inflict that on everyone else) but there are such things as naughty kids too who just decide that they want to be that way - i think that those who are in the latter category need more discipline

one time i was in an inner city secondary school in London on teaching practice when i was approached by a girl who had a repuation for being one of the most difficult kids to handle. she asked me if i liked the school (i gave a non commital answer not knowing why she was asking) and after i asked her what she thought the reply surprised me. She said she didnt like the school and it would benefit from being much stricter! She was one who was difficult to discipline and one would have thought that she was getting what she wanted - but she wasnt - she wanted MORE discipline not less

and i wonder if that is the lesson to be learned from our young people - to give them more structure and firm boundaries than they are given at the moment not less. not just parents and not just teachers - but both working together to similar aims

i think there are many teens in england who are also nice and respectful to teachers. just like there are rude and disrespectful students in america there should be some rude and disrespectful students in england. look around. not all students are that rude. just like there are bad people and good people in this world, you cant say that the whole world is bad just because the majority of it is bad. or you cant say that the whole world is good because a majority of it is good. just remeber that no country, like no person, is perfect

I am a mature adult, but I don't perceive any disrespect from teenagers.

Maybe in some adults, they have a kind of body posture that looks down on young people, and this is seen as an invitation to dis them adults.

Teenagers every where have attitude problems, but if you think the kids are exceptionally rude, it's possible that England has different methods than some other places that results in sassier teens
